How to silence an air compressor!!!

Hi guys,

Have you got any tips/recommendations to make an air compressor less noisy?
Any good quiet compressors?

What sort? 12v 240v? piston , vane or screw?

Ye Don't switch it on ! Probably not the answer you were lookin for !

It will be difficult silence your average hobby compressor like the one in the photo. You can get so called silent compressors but they are either very expensive or don't have the tank capacity or cfm to be of much use. Sticking a hobby compressor is a wooden enclosure runs the risk of it overheating and seizing up.

It’s a 24l oil free

I was looking at an SGS compressor. What capacity is this? And how noisy is it?

I have a Stanley 24l which is used mainly for inflating tyres and an air source for my plasma cutter but it is noisy and the small tank means it is running almost constantly when in use. I have now purchased a 50l compressor from Lidle for £119. It is supposed to be low noise and low vibration but I haven't tried it yet. I've thought about a noise enclosure but a compressor needs to suck in a lot of air so it would need very good ventilation.

hi

it’s a 50 x litre and believe the noise level is around 97db, put it in the box to make it easier to move around,

i intend to fit a section of wood around the edge in order i can fit a lid on it , however will remove the lid when in use due to cooling , if i did fit the lid when in use i would have to fit at least multiple fans along with venting the air inlet to outside of the box

there is a water drain on the bottom of the tank to which i’m going to extend to outside of the box, install a lever valve in order i can drain the water off after every use, see it’s better to drain when the tank is full so the compressed air pushes any remaining water out

if u have a look on u tube there are a lot of videos where people have built boxes etc , but of course just need to ensure it can still breath along with allowances to keep cool

i also bought a combined water trap /oiler for it as per picture , but with the oiler u have to be careful because when u inflate a tyre etc or blow off the brakes u will get oil out of the hose

if the compressor has a twin outlet best to always keep one that doesn’t incorporate any oiler so it’s free from any contamination of oil

this is my first compressor and still learning , the guys here are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful

will post up some more pics as i progress with it,

I built a little housing for it out the back of the workshop. Doesn’t silence it but it greatly reduces the noise inside the building to the point that it’s no longer oppressive. It’s a belt drive unit though so much quieter than the direct drive hobby ones anyway.

definitely puts mine to shame and that’s what u call a real compressor , lol

will u have to screw some superlux to the workshop wall to protect it from fire etc

I could, but I only ever have it powered up and running when I’m there so it’s not presented a problem yet.

No vents, when I’m using it I prop the lid open a few inches and that provides enough airflow. Just gets warm as one would expect. I was meaning to fit some but haven’t got round to it yet.

The power comes from the workshop consumer unit on a 32A type C breaker, fed into an isolator on the inside of the building and the cable from the compressor goes into that.

many thks, it was picking ur brains and indeed a good idea getting it out of the way , also wasn’t sure if u had to mess around with phase wiring etc

PS, have u rawbolted it to prevent any scaly wags going near it

It’s nice and secure

No three phase at mine, so normal 230v compressor - just needs a chunky supply due to the startup current.
