Disco 1 How to replace the aito gearbox pipes?

Hello,

I recently bought my tdi edc and just noticed that one pipe is leaking.
I saw that one of the pipes is connected somewhere on top of the gearbox.
How do you get there to replace it?

Ive not long replaced these pipes I modified a spanner, ie chopped a section out of a ring spanner
enough to go over the pipe like a brake pipe spanner........
Then you will get a quarter turn at a time on the fitting but mine is quite clean underneath
so no rust or crap in my eyes when doing them

I've just done some on a Discovery 2, not the same I know but there is a pipe that goes in to the top of the gearbox. To get it started I used a 19mm crows foot wrench on a 3/8" socket wrench to crack the nut, then once it was loosened I also used a shortened ring spanner with a section cut out. It was quite tedious since you can only just get you arm between the exhaust and chassis or between the exhaust and gearbox and then I could only move the spanner for about 1/8 turn but it is doable. The whole time you can never quite see what you are doing it was mostly done by touch.

Just make sure when you pull the pipe out you get the o-ring as well.

Mine has some dirt and mud/oil, I guess I should have my glasses on while trying, to keep the mud of my eyes

tip i just used (this weekend as well on my D2 - seems everyone is doing them of late) remove the bolts for the rear of the front exhaust section so it can be moved out of the way slightly.

i used a normal combination spanner and was able to get in there just. i did consider cutting one in half to do the job but i didnt want to saw my snapon one in half for one nut so i persevered. was a little fiddly getting the nut done up but ensure the thread is clean and with a little wiggling you can get it done up with your fingers and then the last part with the spanner.


ENSURE you have the small rubber o-ring against the collar on the pipe before you locate them. mine fell off as i was fiddling with positioning. Sods law is that i noticed it after i had finally got the thread to bite properly.

i drop back of box down off the mounts on a jack easy to get at then
