I have a 110 V8 CSW with 5 bikes on a pendle rack off the back. Going down to s of france on the autoroute behaves like a wobbly jelly passing or being passed by HGVs. Pushed across the carriageway without driver input and it is very very scary above 60 mph. Last year spent half the trip driving on the hard shoulder to avoid those mad coach drivers passing at 80! Had everything on the running gear sorted - bushes,, shocks, etc etc. Taking the roof rack off helps. One theory is V8 light engine and with weight of bikes aft of axle it creates a pendulum effect. Wondered if putting the spare wheel on the bonnet would help stability at higher speeds by getting more weight on the front? Anyone had similar experience and how to resolve ?
Many thanks
Gavin

Leave the bikes at home??

Or take the scenic route and make the journey part of the holiday. instead of trying to go flying down there like some demented loon. I'm assuming that if theres 5 bikes then theres also 5 people? and all there luggage etc? Yet you still want to hurtle down the motorway at speeds in excess of 70mph?

What you need is a transit minibus

The rear springs on my 110 are shot and it still handles fine at speed. It is always well laden too. It sounds more like swivel preloads and steering damper issues to me. How does it handle without the weight on board and at 60mph?

Yeah sounds like there's something amiss with that Land Rover! Ours is rock steady at 80mph whether it's fully loaded with bikes/luggage or empty. Not that I do 80, I sit at about 65mph on the motorway.
Ours is a 90 as well, the 110 is supposed to be better?

Handles ok at 60 with no weight.
But problem remains with passing lorries or coaches - wind turbulence pushes you across the road.

They not be shot for much longer mate, i have two nice new shiny ones here for you. ;)

My 110 is stable at 70mph with load or not, just bloody noisy

They'll still be shot. I'll just have shiny new assisters to go inside the shot ones.:p

I emptied everything out the back of mine today and the current springs now have a whole 1" extra clearance. I wuz expecting a bit more than that.:(

Mines noisy but stable, try and keep any heavy items low, I'd look again at the dampers.
Excess play in steering rack, Rear tyre pressures from memory should be up around 65psi,
maybe go for heavier springs all round to firm her up a bit!

surely it should feel more stable loaded than empty. unless yuo throw everything on the roof.and id have though the spare was enough weigh on the back door without five bikes

We had a spate of this with our Disco, I know it's different but the principle's the same, and it turned out to be a combination of a very tight swivel one side, A-frame bushes and a stiff (bent rod) front nearside shock!

Normal speeds, steering was fine, everything worked well. At higher speeds a sparrows fart would send it off-line let alone lorries passing ... ;)
