Do it as I said, pretty sure u will have no issues, alarm never went off on mine

if the batterys so dead it wont unlock the doors i dont think the alarm will still be on
I thought I read somewhere the P38 alarm has a backup battery, so if a crook tries to pull the main battery the alarm can still sound off. I might be confusing with P38 with something else, but I'm sure the manual mentions a backup battery.

Some were indeed a BBUS (Battery Backed Up Sounder) system....

Mine is the posh one with the BBUS. Will run for about 4.5 minutes on it's little ownsome if you disconnect it or battery wrong way. Ear defenders are a must.
