How to hand paint a landy(with pictures)

Just two days into my membership and I've just read this thread. Excellent stuff! This is going to be useful to me in the future.

Thanks for kicking it off, landrover11019,and for all the fine photos. Good advice from everyone else too.

It seems to me that as long as you have an idea of what colour scheme you want, hand painting makes things so much easier than having to set up all that spraying gear, yet still can give a decent result which is well suited to the rugged old Defender-style Landies... but only if time is taken in the preparation.

I think I'll practise on SWMBO's Avensis ....!

After a little bit of a washout this weekend I only managed to get the roof painted before the heavens opened, thank god for quick drying paint.

Its looking really good though, so I'll get some pictures up soon of the finished disco if my dad manages to get the black bits painted this week whilst I slave over a computer at work :-(

Just wondering how well hand painting lasts and is it still resistant like it would be if you sprayed the paint on?

Also i was going to hand paint my 90 with paint from 'the paintman' has anyone used this paint before? what do people think of it?

I have sprayed mine with a compessor so wouldn't know buddy.

ok now worries looks good! did you sand down and undercoat before you did the topcoat? or just put the top coat straight on?

Sanded it all down taking all the panels off including bulkhead and give them a couple of coats in red oxide to protect them then painted it. Took me a long time but want to do it once not once a year like a garden shed.

No probs with the paint lasting, if you paint by hand/roller, the paints alot thicker than spraying anyway.

am i correct in thinking you cant (really) use metallic paint when painting by hand?

No, you'd need to spray paint metallic. It generally comes in a flat matt base coat onto which you spray a clear lacquer to get the shine. Or at least that's how it was done in the days of cellulose and two pack paints, now water based paints are the industry standard it may be different. I would imagine it still works on the principal of base coat + lacquer though.

Ahh, is it the same for pearlessant? I want to do mine Epsom green really but won't be able to spray it! :-(

Yes, it's a different type of paint which will only be available as two pack or the more modern water based stuff. brush paint is synthetic, it's a lot thicker than cellulose or two pack or the modern water based paints, you can apply synthetic paint with a spray gun, it goes on in one coat and is a softer paint, it's weeks before it will go hard enough to sand a run out of it, so if you make a balls up you have to live with it. Spay paints are much thinner and you apply several coats to get a thick enough layer of paint.

I've never used water based paints but when i used to paint stuff regularly if you sprayed anything decent you'd use either cellulose paint, which is a one pack paint, or two pack which was a base coat to which you add a hardener, once you've mixed it it will set hard in the tin so you have to throw away any left over. metallic paints were only ever available in these formats as you need the even distribution of a spray nozzle to get the 'sparkley bits, for want of a better word, suspended evenly in the coat of paint.
