I'm afraid injection pumps are a bit of a mystery to me, I know roughly how they work but when it comes to tuning or resetting them I'm thick
Maybe a good diesel service shop can reset it to standard settings and give it a good service? I have hear of worn injectors as well which open too early but this would likely give a black smoke screen.
It's a tricky one, as you said its almost half the mpg so there MUST be something wrong somewhere.
