How much do you think she's worth?

While going to the bank in the local town someone asked me if I was interested in selling my SIII. I've had similar thoughts on and off for a few months basically with the idea of swapping it for something more practical what with my shooting and climbing (possibly a 110).

Anyway, I know how much work I've put into it (kind of...) but how much do you guys think it might be worth?

Got the original vehicle for ~£100 of a friend and since then it's had:

  • Galvanised chassis
  • Brake system (pads, wheel cylinders, piping, master cylinder)
  • All Lights (headlights upgraded to halogens)
  • Injectors
  • Side-mirrors
  • Alternator
  • Rear diff seal
  • Doors (all three and back one is heated - although yet to be wired) - including windows
  • Timing Chain
  • 4 Bronco Mud Terrain Tyres
  • Steering ball joints
Haven't touched the engine and gearbox much but she runs well - bit of smoke at start-up but once warmed up she goes well. Doesn't leak oil either.

All told there's somewhere between £2,500 and £3000 (inc VAT) spent on it so far.

So estimates? (Or offers?) it'd be a reluctant sale and probably only go ahead if I could get a more modern good runner as a replacement since I only seem to do long journeys (shortest I've done in the last 3 months is 100 miles).

Cheers,
Ed

it won't be worth what you've spent on it, we were looking into selling ours and even if it were in mint condition it wouldn't pay us back what we've spent on her, and we haven't spent as much as you!!

Unfortunately spending three grand doing up an every day series landy doesn't make any sense unless you plan on keeping it for a long time.

How's it going ed?
I think you should keep it. A good Landy you've built there.

Busy - but things have slowed down now that I've returned to Wales for a bit (will be down until the last week of April or so). Then it's going to be all go with exams, group project, term finishes and then two days later start work back in Guildford.

I'd like to keep it but I'd also like to get something a little bit more practical for longer journeys. I do like the look of this one at least superficially anyway, and unfortunately can't afford two at the moment. A couple of years maybe but not at the moment.

Basically I'd been thinking about it but never planned on it - then this chap following me down the high-street got me thinking more seriously about it.

Maybe if I got rid of the racket in 3rd gear I'd be even less willing to contemplate selling it.

For me, driving something I've built myself is infinitely more satisfying than just buying something 'off the shelf'. If you sell it now, dopn't you think you might regret it in a few years time? If you think about it driving a series Land-Rover long distance is not a bad work out for a climber - upper body workout from the steering and leg exercise with the clutch and brakes!

Clutch - mine's got the third lightest of all 7 vehicles on the farm, the dumper's an electronic clutch and the digger doesn't have one!

Also the steering isn't that heavy, I think that's because there's so little rubber in contact with the ground though...

Mind you, I've only had the chance to go climbing once (indoors our outdoors) since the Snowdonia trip!

I have no doubt I'd regret it - as I mentioned I'm just wondering at the moment... I suspect I'll have a change of heart once I replace eventually replace the steering joints and she stops wandering across the road...

I think I'll have a day working on the vehicles tomorrow - Suzuki's coming up for it's MOT so needs a once-over and then'll try the ball joints and perhaps whack the road tyres on and pootle up to Swansea for a test-drive. You never know - might take it to Bisley for some full-bore stuff when I have to return next Thursday.

BTW - did you want to try your hand at some climbing?
