Sorry for all the questions I'm posting but...
How many gears does my car have in commandshift ? I thought it was 6
but it would only go to 5!!!

Same as mine. There should be 6 gears. You need to be over 1700 rpm to change up on the flat. If you're still accelerating, or climbing a hill, nearer 2,000. The car will change down of its own accord.

What's the rpm, in auto, at 70mph? Should be 6th gear @ 2,000rpm
If you switch to sports mode at a steady 70mph do the revs go up? Shouldn't.
If you switch to sports mode at 70mph, assuming the revs don't go up, can you change down then change up again?

Trying to establish if you have a gearbox problem (likely to be expensive) or dashboard indication when in manual mode (live with it)

Ok, so I've been for a drive and paid particular attention to revs and speed and everything seems to be good. At 2000 rpm the speed was 70. In commandshift it went into 6th. Happy days.:)

Both the Freelander 1 and 2 allow yer to change from Drive to Sport and back to Drive when moving. All the sport mode is doing is making the car more responsive. It will eggscellerate faster when selecting sport mode by dropping a gear or two and allowing the engine to rev higher before it changes up a gear, if yer change to sport when on the move.

If yer pull away int sport it will eggscellerate at max power/speed.

If yer pull away int Drive with yer foot ont floor it will detect "we're having a race" and perform like sport mode while eggscellerating.

Just be careful. It's not ideal to thrash an auto as yer'll break it sooner than if yer were to do the same to a manwell gearbox, int comparison.

I put mine into sports mode when driving in the city. It pulls away in 2nd and hangs on to 3rd a lot longer. Fewer gear changes can't be a bad thing IMHO.

1st gear is low. If you pull out of a normal size residential road junction and turn right, it will select 2nd gear as the from end goes over the middle white line. Hard to see ont revs as they won't change. Plug in a diagnostic and watch the gear selection. A FL2 can pull away int 2nd but if it keeps doing this it will fek 2nd gear.

What about towing? Normal or sports mode?
Leave it in drive. If it starts to slow it will know it's towing and on a hill and drop a gear to rev harder. If you prefer you can select sport just before the hill so it's a bit more responsive to the eggstra demand required for the hill. Then stick it back to drive after the hill.

Sport will make it rev higher so it will use more fool.
