How is the front CV lubricated ????

Hi, on my 1998 R/R P38, I cant see how the L/H front axle CV joint is supposed to be lubricated, mine is getting a little noisy on full L/H lock. The old classic had a hub with oil/grease in it, the P38 just has a rubber boot over it, I thought it may be from the axel oil, but there is a seal at the end of the axle according to the manual, and it does not show any way of lubeing the CV................any ideas.

The Cv's are not lubricated other than by the charge of special grease put in before final assembly. The grease is held inside by the rubber boot. Problem arises when the boot splits and the grease gets thrown out like a spin drier. This is normal for 99% of CV joints.

Thanks for the info Irishrover, is there any way to re grease it, ie leaver it, pull it, inject it, or generaly try to get it into the rubber boot. Or will it damadge the boot to much, to try and get grease in there ???

If the original grease has gone, then either the boot has split and will need replacing, or one of the clamps/clips on the end has come loose. If it's the clip, then that's how you get the grease in (before replacing the clip).

The grease won't just disappear without there being some kind of problem .....

You can regrease them but use the special grease for CV's and only put in the correct amount as overfilling will create overpressure and could blow the boot. If the boot has split and the grease has been lost then the damage has probably been done. my old Dad used to work at Hardy Spicer in Birmingham for years and worked on the CV production towards the end of his time there. Used to refurbish CV's and propshafts on a weekend for the beer money!!
New CV's are not too expensive, hardest part is separating the hub from the swivel if it's rusted on.
