Just bought a Disco TD5 Auto. £100 and 600 miles seems ok. Got 600 out of my Evo VII GTA I just sold on LPG for £90 so no complaints from me. I get 600 for £93 from my 1.6 auto Mitsi Colt.

Hmm,
I wish!!
My '98 300Tdi EDC Auto with egr blanked gets 650km (@400 miles) on a tankfull. This is ny 4th one of these and all have done the same MPG - average of 25. This is a good as it gets here!! My DII V8 got 17MPG on average. But... 95octane petrol is NZ$1.80/litre (@GBP .61) and deisel is NZ$1.46/litre (@GBP .50) + a .04c/km (GBP .02/mile) tax. Still cheaper to run a TDi but not by a huge amount by the time the extra servicing on a diesel comes in to play.

hmm my 300 tdi auto is getting about 250 miles to 3/4 of a tank around town - i have 265 at on it and a roof rack with couple of spots. I fill it up till i can hear it close to teh top and usually fill it up at a 1/4 tank - but still thats sucking compared to what some of you are posting

I get 360 to a £90 tank full (97R 300Tdi ES auto) but its longest run with me has been about 60 miles, it does a 15 mile round trip most days and tows 1800kg 20-30 miles most weekends. It's about the same as my old Volvo 940 2.3 auto did, sad but true.

Towed my 1200 kg caravan down to Cornwall in the summer and got about 400 to a tank straight shell diesel.Worked out 22.5 mpg.Very hilly Cornwall

HECK ive done 2 tanks of doosal and i am only getting 300 miles a tank 300tdi why is it so bad on fuel ?? whats egr ??

ginge

Hiya Ginge, when you say you only get 300 to a tankfull, can you remember how many litres it took to fill up the tank?

Obviously mpg can be affected by loads of things including driving style, but if you only got 300 mls from a true tankful, that means you are only getting something like 15mpg, which sounds either doubtful or terrible - depending on the answer to the question above.

We have two Discos: my wifes is a Tdi 200 manual and gives 36mpg day in day (40 on a run), I have a Tdi 300 auto and gives 33mpg day in day out (on a run 36).

I've just come back from Morocco where I carried a heavy load of spares and tools, was in the mountains for most of the mileage (alt. 2000+ mtrs!)
and I still achieved 33mpg average.

If you would like further info on how to improve your fuel consumption, give us some more info on the vehicle, eg what year, manual or auto, EDC or manual throttle pedal.

You should be getting 500+ miles to a tank.

Cheers
Dave

many thanks i need to fill up tomorrow so will do a proper full tank, but she does billow ou black smoke when you push the throttle down.

Right Ginger, if she's billowing smoke, the first thing I would be doing is giving her a good service and change all the filters.

You can buy a set of filters for a Tdi300 from these people for only £6.28+vat. I usually have 2 or 3 sets in stock as I like to ensure she has good fluids. Filter Kit - Disco 300TDIhttp://www.paddockspares.com

Once you've done the service, engine oil, gear & transfer box oil and axles, then go looking at the rubber hoses that go in and out of the intercooler, sometimes they delaminate inside and so block the passage of air.

Black smoke usually means the engine is not getting enough air for the amount of diesel fuel being pumped through. Good rubber hoses and a new airfilter often makes a huge difference.

Cheers

many thanks will do all that prob next weekend now just ordered my egr blanking plate.

I can't believe this!! I think I'm about to get 340 to a tank!!! Its a 300tdi with 2 inch lift, INSA turbo MT tyres and a lightbar, but surely it can't be this bad. I even started free wheeling down hill ( I know its bad) I've cleaned the sedimentor, blanked the EGR and replaced filters. Now, she is going into the garage to have the rear axle rubber thing replaced, its cut up bad and wobbling under acceleration, but would that make a load of difference? If not, what else should I do, cos it only has 2 weeks of warranty left?
Please help.

Hi there, Is it manual or auto box? What year is it?

The accesories you mention will all have an effect on fuel consumption but can you tell us what size tyres you are running.

If you've got bigger tyres on, it will affect your gearing and will screw up the reading on the odometer, therefore the number of miles driven, therefore you mpg calculations.

I too am getting a bit of black smoke when the turbo comes in and then a light haze from then onwards up the revs. Ive just changed a bent rod due to hydrolock, it didn't do it before. I also replaced the turbo and had to remove actuator rod to fit it through the bracket. If I didn't set the rod i.e boost back to what it was before would that cause it to smoke? I think ive set it a bit low.
Ive serviced it since changeing the rod.
Dave.

Hi Dave, what makes you think that you've set the actuator road a bit low?

If you've set it a bit low, that would would mean less air therefore a richer mixture which could lead to unburnt fuel therefore more smoke.

Also in NZ 95 Disco Auto Non EDC,Non egr. Tweaked boost and pump. 28.5-29.5mpg. About the same before tweak but less power. Does'nt vary greatly unless towing.
