How Do You Check VC On A V6 Auto?

Hi All,
I know you can check the VC on a manual by lifting a rear wheel, big bar and socket with car in gear. But how do you do it with an auto box.

The car is a 2002 V6 ES having covered 41k miles full service history etc and been in our care for 4 weeks now. Drives and rides better than our Disco II Td5 but no where near as economical only 19 - 24 mpg.
There a few things that you might be able to help with if you can.

1. VC and how tc check
2. VIS, the dealer tells me that the rattle from the inlet manifold is out of VIN range. Did Land Rover modify this.
3. The dealer is checking the paintwork as it's crazed on the bonnet and they think it is heat related????
4. Has anybody changed the spark plugs on one of these, it looks like the inlet manifold has to come off!!!!

Hi Tone. . .are we talking vcu here, if so ,should in neutral select [jack up drivers rear wheel] handbrake off ,and every thing safe [ie cannot roll], you should be able to turn very slowly in both directions , mark both sides off diffs fore and aft off vcu, and take a note of movement ,you should be able to turn against it,but only slowly,then do the same to the other rear wheel,maybe more feed back from others . . .

Hi Ming,

An automatic has no clutch, thus no direct connection from the wheeltrain to the engine, there's oil in-between ??? Would the vcu react the same way ??

Will . . .not sure now, you got me doubting myself,more feedback maybe. . .

It seems that you just stick it in park and it's the same procedure as with the manual box, jack up the right rear wheel, chock all the others, either remove said wheel or the hub nut cover, fit large socket to the hub nut and with a BIG bar apply steady pressure in a clockwise direction. If it turns slowly then VCU is fine, if not then oh dear.

Viscous Coupling (VCU) I think is the item in question.
