Hi,
I've recently bought a 2001 TD5 GS. The fuel pump is quite noisy, and since running out of fuel yesterday its become noisier still.

If you'd like to listen ...

[nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mg6ZakPtjz0"]YouTube- Discovery 2 Noisy Fuel Pump or Filter[/nomedia]

From listening to that I'm assuming that I should replace the pump?

So I've pulled up the rear carpet, and removed the access panel, but I can't see any obvious way to unscrew the pump. The Tech Manual suggest using a tool called LRT-19-009 but that seems to be "slightly" expensive!

Any help would be much appreciated.
Is there a how to guide for this task?

Hi mate, the way I always get these nylon/plastic retaining collars off is to use a lump hammer and a suitably shaped piece of softwood, solid enough to take a few blows from the hammer.

Set one end of the piece of wood on the edge of the collar (imagining that you are trying to turn it anti-clockwise) and with the lump hammer to a series of light to medium taps on the other end of the wood. As soon as it moves at all, then you should be able to unscrew it by hand.

It's much harder to describe than to actually do..................:D:D:D

Good luck

Dave

I read a thread on here a while ago about noisey fuel pumps on the TD5. From memory, someone brought theirs back to life by taking it apart and cleaning the inner filter. Might be worth a look?

Cheers, Andy

It soulds like an air trap, taking it apart and cleaning would help, then in putting it back on any trapped air may get expelled

Well you have to remove it to replace it, so if you can remove it and strip it down and it works, then you can save yourself £180 ish.

Would be interested to hear how it goes, but from your video it's def not happy, to me it's almost like its struggling to "pick" the fuel up.....DEF worth a look in there.
