To do this you really need to remove the viscous fan first to give working room - 36mm cranked spanner - then to remove the tensioner assembly you'll need a 15mm socket and long socket driver, undo anticlockwise.

The viscous fan un-does by turning clockwise.

With the main tensioner bolt you will need a rather big breaker bar. However, before you do this I'd reccomend trying the "1p trick". I can't post a link as I'm using my phone to access the Internet, and can't get the bugger to copy & paste, so you'll have to do a search on here for it.

I would suggest you also take a close look at the crankshaft pulley, its rubber mounted and when it goes fubar it can squeek / rattle all sorts, this points to the fact the noise reduces when you take the load off, by all means check / replace the tensioner as its good practice, but be prepared for a big bill for the crank pulley

thanks guys for all your help manage to sort it out and fit new tensioner, appears quite again.Urban Panzer the crank pulley you have mentioned what symtoms do you get when the rubber starts to perish ? just thought i would ask to be on the safe side.
