Over the last week or so I've been shortlisting TD5's, I've trawled through just about every resource including the usual one's like ebay and autotrader. Reducing the final list down to 5 private and 5 trade sellers. On saturday I phoned them all, explaining I was serious to purchase and would pay in cash. I really thought by tonight a TD5 would be in my driveway, but no

Of the private sellers, none would see me over the weekend despite my offers of a bag of cash. One explained it would be 'frightfully inconvenient' and to call back on Friday (frightfully inconvenient my arse!). Of the dealers, none were impressed by a 'cash offer' probably because I wanted a fair bit knocked off their inflated prices (most were a grand over book prices), and I didn't want their 'rip off' finance.

So, despite a glut of vehicles on offer none came my way. All's not lost, a dealer phoned me tonight, one whom I had contacted a while back. He has what I'm looking for and willing to accept readys.

As for a bloody recession, dont believe it, nobody wants your dosh

We bought a Cmax run around on an 08 plate last year for the wife from a car supermarket, it was £12500 or there abouts and we could pay cash but not only would he not move at all on price he would only take £1500 max in cash the rest had to be a bankers draft, he blamed money laundering rules.

Maximum sum of cash you can pay is £12k, after that it can be refused (unless the rules have changed).

These days, there's no real advantage for a trader to sell for cash - it would need to be banked, etc. Maybe your expectation of discount was too much? Did you try offering a bit more and seeing what happened?

in my case it was defo no more than £1500, just a tosser of a sales man then, pity the wife liked the car so much after weeks of looking, i would of walked if it was just me.
