How did the Hippo get it's name?

The LR history books quote a reporter saying a Freelander looked like a hippo during a press launch, and LR over herd this and used it for advertising afterwards. Hence the pic posted at the beginning of the fred.
 
I doubted the Freelander when I had the oppurtunity to buy a new one in 2001. Now having had one for a few days I realise how wrong you can be. I like my Hippo. :D

And I like mine. Guess all the owners do like them. The only negative sounds come from the camp of the jealous. But as you have seen the light, sooner or later they will as well, in the meantime please treat them gently and do not show them pity, that might hurt their feelings and create a psychological shortcircuit endangering their otherwise inevitable discovery that the hippo is indeed the best LR at the moment.

I am sure it has been said before but being active as a club secretary in a previous life I have found these things to be true.
Series one owners think everything else isn't Land Rover.
Series two and three think anything with coils is the spawn of satan.
Disco owners usually have no opinion as they couldn't afford a Range Rover.
Range Rover owners have a superiority complex.
I wanted to replace the P38 with something economical, comfortable and easy to live with so the obvious choice was something I haven't had before.
Hippo TD4 Auto ES............................:p

Others will as well but now they still think they are the DEFENDERs of the brand being on the edge of the DISCOVERY of thinking they have the best of the RANGE of cars in the LR line. Poor souls.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

My insurance covers (at least that's what I pay for) a single room, will that be allright with you ??
 
Y'see... you've obviously recognized the drawbacks of Freeloader ownership and bought appropriate insurance, including a hotel stay for when it breaks down.

If you can keep such forward thinking going you'll be upgrading to a Discovery before too long I reckon. Maybe from there you might even think about the dizzying heights of a proper Land Rover once you get used to the thinner air (but superior ability) of Disco ownership.

Hi Adz,

I must agree about the Disco, not by personal experience but of a neighbour's. He used to drive a Disco when he was still actively working, he has had 3 I think, and he was very pleased with these. When he got retired he sold the Disco and bought a Porsche cabrio instead. Fortunately for him he still has a Defender 90 soft top with which he goes offroading. I have driven that Def a couple of times but I must say I do like and appreciate a thousand times more the Freelander. As for the Porsche, I am sure that, if he could turn the clock back, he would never buy that again but stick to the Disco. He doesn't say it with that many words but ..... When he came along in the Freelander for the first time he said the ride was almost as good as the Disco, the whole car was of course a level down compared to the Disco, but all by all it was a very positive experience for him. He liked the Steptronic gearbox and the smooth agile handling, entirely different to the lugging Disco. He also felt/had the same safe reassuring feeling as in the Disco. As for me? I can enter the FL in the garage where a Disco/Defender would have to stay outside. As I have a double garage but with individual doors it would be silly someone having his car outside with a completely empty garage (apart of a couple of bicycles) available. So once you start developing a breathing problem and you can't stand the thin air anymore there is hope for you, you don't have to fall into an empty black hole, I hope at that time you won't bite your fingernails of regretting not having taken that step loooooong time before.:D

don't knock it. When we did the newbie run there were quite a few freelanders and they did very well off road. As long long as you know your vehicles capabilities you should be alrite:D
