How can i tell if my diff lock is working apart from the light on the dash
need a quick answer as i just about to knock the car dealer out if it is not

Im more old school landrovers but your welcome to try this out..I think it will still work.

Jack up one front wheel just so its clear of the ground. with the hand brake on, in neautral with the diff lock OUT the wheel should rotate.
Now put the diff lock IN and the wheel will still move but only the freeplay amount, a quarter of a turn ish. Hence confirming the diff lock is engaging.

This works with the older motors but the td5 is more elec-trickery and I dont know if there is any trickery on the gearbox? To new for a squddie.....

i'm not conviced i jacked it up spining the wheel with my foot locked the diff wheel stops turning ok let go of the leaver and went to give it a try again and turns free
so i dont think it is holding

with your foot locked the diff? what is there for your foot to lock?

NVM! Didnt read it propperly

You shouldn't have to hold the difflock in place, it should push over and stay there, is it not doing that?

Pos.. Is my advice right for a TD5?? I too am slightly lost with the foot thing? Have an assistant rock the wheel back and forth whilst you hold the lever in the diff lock position, lack of use could make it a bugger to engage but very unlikly.
Once it seems to be in release the lever and try the wheel test..

nope it ant will have to get the dealer sorted the put a new clutch and flywheel on it befor i got so sounds like they have mist something

In summary,

You shouldn't have to hold your difflock in place, it should stay in place just as if you've selected another gear. If you are having to hold it in place there is definitely something wrong with it which you need to have fixed free of charge by the garage that sold it to you.

I don't and never will understand how the TD5 works, but the difflock principle is just the same. You shouldn't be able to rotate your raised wheel if the difflock is engaged, because the difflock ensures that each of your wheels rotates at the same speed. Because none of the other 3 wheels are rotating, the raised wheel will nor rotate. You will however be able to turn it a fraction, as bodgit suggested, simply because of slack in the drive train. I think that you need to make sure that you don't have your hand brake on (is that right?), whilst in Neutral. Putting the handbrake on will prevent the wheels moving altogether which wont show anything!

On the other hand, if you engage the difflock and you can not turn the wheel, it is in fact working as it should, but there may be a problem with the gear that holds the difflock lever in place if you see what I mean.

Good luck

well i had the hand brake on, now that you mention it, but only to the first click.
but i will have to get someone to spin the wheel for me but i dont think thatit i working right.
you say it should be like selecting a gear. when i move it to locked there is no like positive clunk or real felling that it is locked, as you do when selecting high or low range.
you know what i mean?

Take it offroad and get your tyres nice and muddy...tie a rope to the rear tow point and other end to a good sized tree... stick yer diflock on and slowly drive forward to tension the rope till u stop and your wheels start to spin... keep em spinning steadily while a friend quickly tells you whats happening... make sure its on a slippery surface.... its brutal but simple! Go knock that MoFo out anyway then u wont have to go do it when it starts making a mess on your driveway:eek:

Yes I know what you mean

There isn't a click as such, but more of a feeling that it has pushed over far enough to comfortably stay in position if you can imagine that feeling. You should be able to push the lever as far to the left as possible, don't be soft, give it a good firm push and it should hold its self there. If it doesn't stay in place, you need to get it sorted!

Thanks guys I have been raging about it all night.
It is the fact that they put a new spigot bearing in and a new flywheel on before i got it.
Could this have had anything to do with the problem?
