How bad is this?

Been trying to fault find the lack of reverse light, so decided to replace the switch that goes into the gearbox.

Discovered that the old switch has actually broken half-way down the thread, with the broken part probably rattling around in the gearbox somewhere.

Naturally, I'm really worried that this loose part is gonna be trouble. Can anyone tell me just how bad this is?

Incidentally, the old switch didn't have a locking nut on it, so one of the previous owners probably just screwed it fully in, causing it to eventually snap. Jesus.

id try and get it out if possible things can easily get dragged into 5th gears ,need the top off to get at it ,ensure switch is set with reverse gear fully slected

So leaving the broken part in there is not an option? Is there any chance it'll just fall to the bottom, become stuck there with oil and gunk, then forever stay out of the way of the gears?

Alternatively, could it actually jam up the gears at some point and cause havoc?

If I were to get the top off, would I need to remove the entire gear box first or could it be done in situ?

it will be in bottom but there isnt alot of room down there you may be able to do box as is but often just undoing mounts and lowering on a jack a little is necessary

Is there a sump type area where the broken part might settle or should I seriously aim to have a garage remove this?

Sorry to bring this up again, but need to confirm something.

Just rand a local garage who said that the entire gearbox (LT77, by the way) would have to be removed to get the broken switch out. Is this true or can it be done another, less fussy way?

id try with a magnet first ,thread is bronze but plunger is steel

Using a magnet where would you extract the broken switch from then? Would it be the drainage plug?

How bad is this?
