Got back from a short run today and could smell the hot engine in my 4.6 V8. Temp gauge was normal, and coolant level just below the line (as usual). Some pressure in the system but not more than normal.

Left it to cool for about half an hour (while reading on here about possible causes). Checked the hose from the rad to the expansion tank - OK. Checked for any white gum or moisture inside the oil filler cap - all OK. Dipped the oil - just below minimum level!

Have completed around 3k since last service and oil change. No obvious signs of a leak.

Any idea what might cause the oil loss?
What grade oil should I top up with?

All help much appreciated.

i had a 4.0 v8 p38 that used to burn oil, i put it down to wear and tear, probably something like piston rings, it has no leaks just burns it whilst drivin along, unless you ready for a engine strip down and rebuild then i would keep toppin up with 15w 40 as its cheap enough and will do the trick.

theres only two ways for oil to go, leaking to outside/water system or burning!!!

its prolly one or more oil rings or stem seals. check for faint blue smoke at exhaust
