Don't worry, I'm not bragging...

However, I have found engines to ne more reliable the more you service them.

Mine is under 30k so I'm pretty sure that's a major factor in its reliability so far. But wife's Citroen C4 1.6hdi is almost at 80k. They are will known to blow turbo's then engines, mostly due to a bit of bad design, lack of services and muppetry.

Hers is a short journey to work & back with the odd shopping trip, but good quality low Ash oil and BP Ultimate diesel seems to be helping it soldier on :)

Yes maintenance is everything. But in general terms a well maintained diesel engine will out last a well maintained petrol engine. It's just the way it is. :)

oh indeed.. due to the combustion nature and the delivery power..
however, you'll be deaf and stinking like an oiler when the it does finally give up

Agree'd, diesels are build stronger for the forces they have to withstand. Petrols are built lighter for quicker acceleration.

Funny though, the diesel engine was designed first.... Pity they hadn't ran with that particular idea because if they had sunk money into the diesel as they had with the petrol, we'd have engines doing far superior miles to the gallon than we currently do, but likely with DPF's that work well without having to drive at speed for miles (using extra bleedin fuel...) and so on & so forth.

Now, it's more about lining pockets of the rich & Government ministers than actual saving planets and poor folks cash o_O

Yes indeed. How do you get deaf when you cannot hear the engine inside the car.

There are DPF fitted with heaters to do the job for you. Mostly on commercials though. Air quality even with more vehicles on the road is many times better today than it was not so long ago. In the fifties and sixties it was horrendous compared with today. Think some are reaching for utopia. Bit like all the food cleanliness rules, were many people now go down with even the slightest contamination. Nobody builds resistance any more. Everything is too clean.

cats off then!!!
I love my diesel?
I would like the v8 but the fuel economy, I cant justify...even adding lpg seems to me extra gizmos to eventually fail. If I had umpteen cars a week to repair then I would have the beastious V8's superb rumble all day long...without worry.

I have the oil burner and my brother has the V8. I've seen the V8 down to its short and curlies a few times now and all its guts out. I'm still not sure how the diesel works but it is under the bonnet somewhere!
