Afternoon guys. Over the last few days the car has started to make a horrible noise from the front. It goes away when accelerating but as soon as you lift off or slow down it comes back. Sometimes it's a loud piercing screech other times its soundso like a fan belt slipping. Had a look at the propshaft and there is a few mm of travel.

Sounds like this although not as severe. Is it the difference starting to go, transfer box or uj's?
Thanks for your help

edit: just to add, changed all oils, g/box, diffs, t/box and nothing nasty came out.

if you could get all four wheels off the floor on stands then have someone put in gear and listen underneath, bearing in mind hands and legs away from limb ripping parts...

Sounds "light" like a bearing, idler pulley or belt routing pulley, even alternator/AC compressor sort of thing.

May be wrong, but that would be simple to check...

where is theplay in the propshaft is it the UJs and is there any signs of rust around them if so replace them. otherwise check the noise goes if you turn the aircon off as it could be the cluctch on the compressor

Thanks for all the replies guys, as usual, a fount of all knowledge.
did you find out the cause of the noise boyo?
99.9% sure it's the prop shaft uj's. There's a bit of movement and they look rusted to hell so guessing they're the original ones. Going to replace them the see if that sorts it.

Horrible noise from the front end...

... is it a diesel
4.6 gems :p

Now for the water leak (rain, not coolant)....

Been well maintained then. :D:D

Diesel P38 owners are sometimes unhappy about jibes from those who have the far less reliable petrol engines. We however do reserve the right to wave jauntily and smile knowingly as we pass you when you are broken down. :p:D

I've been really lucky so far with the only "breakdown" being a burst hose.

My car has been really, really reliable

What the hell am I doing wrong? o_O

:p:D

Don't brag about it, you maybe tempting fate. Diesel engines are inherently more reliable than petrol engines. It's just the way it is. :D
