Hi,
Trying to find a horrible metalic chattering sound coming from under car when going over uneven road surfaces. It just takes minor ripples in the road to make it chatter - full length speed humps just makes it worse and louder. Sounds like a loose heat shield as it is a tinny metal scraping type sound. The sound seems to be coming from low down in the general region of under the gear selector. It could be more to the nearside than that and forward, hard to tell. Thought it was the cat broken up inside the exhaust pipe but new exhaust has made no difference (changed whole system). It certainly sounded like coming from exhaust area. Car been on ramps a number of times at the garage but nothing loose underneath etc can be found. Under the car everything has been checked as far as heat shields go. The new exhaust is secure, no play in anti roll bar, prop shaft is secure. I read on a forum that there is a heat shield over IRD box but this area has been checked. A bit of the dash which houses heater controls has been removed as has the gearshift surround to check where the cable which runs from lever to gearbox but nothing found wrong. Basically when car up on ramps nothing underneath can be found to cause noise. It certainly sounds like it is coming from low down and only happens if road uneven.

Not sure where to check next with this but noise is spoiling the car?

I'd be looking at wishbone bushes and ARB drop links, especially if it's only there on uneven roads. And making sure the sump guard is bolted up tight.

Maybe a fault with the new exhaust ? Especially if it didn't rattle before ? Maybe loose baffles inside or inside the cat ?

Same sound before and after new exhaust. Sump tray has been fully secured but no difference. Anti roll bar seems fine.

What about the drop links and the wishbone bushes ? Has the ARB slipped sideways and is making unintended contact with the strut?

I had a noise similar to this, couldn't find it anywhere. It turned out to be a loose metal plate under the passenger seat. For now I've just stuffed a piece of cloth inbetween and alls good.

Could be a broken coil spring, I had a similar sound, I thought it sounded like a loose exhaust clamp, turned out to be the front coil spring, both replaced and all was good.
