Horn probs

I brought a freelander mk4 2002
I brought it of a dodgy car salesman.
It passed mot.
I then received car.
First time i tried horn it didnt work.
I doubt the mot bloke would pass it not working but he does all his cars etc.
Itvwent for mot failed only on horn
Horns work when locking with bonnet open(both beep)
Switches work on steering
Rotary coupler tested and works
I tested horn independantly (before realising there were two (drivers side horn))
There are two wires on connector but no voltage when i press button on wheel.
I have read allot of threads about problem with stereo.
I brought the freelander just over a year ago and it came with a non factory stereo
Any ideas on what i can do as i have to get it through mot

Yeah i took it out and ran a meter from contact to contact.
I wound it and tested in incase there was a break in one of the wires that would detache and reattach
Its basically just a ribbon wound on a plastic spool with contact pins on either side of the spool.
I really dont get whats going on.
The reason i mention the stereo is because there are allot of posts about peoples horns not working after they put in a new stereo.
It had past mot but first time i tried horn it didnt work.
Infact it was same situation as another post and they decided to out a switch in.
I dont know much about cars but a bit about testing but now i really dont know where the problem can be.
If you have any more ideas would be great.

Try swapping the rotary coupling cables. There are a couple of spare connections that would be used for the CC. It should be possible to swap the horn pins over to those unused spares.

Have you tried a known good item ?

Can you wire that independently?
 
there are wires that are attached to the connector that you plug the rear of the rotary coupling in.
This connector joins the rotary c then after the rotary c it attaches to the connector for the horn buttons (+ the volume control for stereo)

So going back to the connector that you plug the rear of the rotary coupling in
pins 3 and 4 are the relavent wires to turn horn on and off.
Is this just a circuit that basically comes
from the + of battery and then goes to the horn and the other wire attached to the horn runs to earth or can i run a meter on these connections to see if i am getting power.

I just didnt want to short it out.

(I also tested through the connector and both horn buttons on wheel are fine)

Actually that must be the case as all it is is a switch (horn button)


How can i test if there is power going into the connector?
 
From memory, the horn button just earth the horn relay coil. So simply bridging the 2 connections should activate the horn. If the horn then sounds, the wiring up to the rotary coupler is proved ok. So the fault must lie in the coupler or wheel switch.
 
I just put a meter on the connector pins
3 and 4 and set it to read volts (dc)
It read 0.03 v
So no power
Am i correct doing that?
 
If i am it either means no earth (-) or no positive (+)
If i try running the test from whatever is the positive to the nearest earth connector on the bodywork i should then see if there is a problem with the + ????

I am not sure what to do
 
I wonder if the + comes direct from the fusebox under bonnet.

The fuses are all ok
The alarm beeps horns
Just concerned as the bloke from the garage answered he would have to take all the wiring apart when i asked about faults and what i had tested
 
The horn switch simply grounds the horn relay in the engine bay fuse box. The Purple/ Yellow should show 12 volts with reference to ground. Grounding P/Y should activate the horn

One other thing is now the electrics ate going weird.
The rear window opens when i turn ignition and when i press the remote the o/s door lock has a little fit
 
i am colour blind
I asked someone about the wire colours
The connector you plug the rear of rotary into is brown and yellow(pin 3)
Pin 4 is black
The door locks are ok
It was just because i was locking them open.
The rear window only opens when i re connect battery

Sounds like you have a dirty connection somewhere or a dicky earth ...

I'm not sure if the horn is powered without ignition or not ... (in case you didn't have it on) ...

I now have tested it the correct way and earthed the meter and put it in pin 3 which is brown/black on this model freelander
I am getting 12v
So it means there is a problem with the earth
