Hole in thermostat

Hello again,
I just took the car out drove in traffic for ten mins let the car idle for ten mins, drove in traffic ten mins then onto a motorway road drove with revs higher than usual. excellereated to 70 for a couple of miles. The car temperature was bang in the middle of the gauge. back onto a A road pulled over got my son to rev the car and i checked the fan, it was harder to stop the fan than before but i could stop it. Drove home 10 mins drive.
RESULT...THE CAR DID NOT OVERHEAT.

I don't understand it.

Mike.

The fan is only really necessary in certain conditions, crawling in traffic, climbing hills, towing, high ambient temperatures etc. If the fan is working a bit it will cope most of the time.
It should be impossible to stop when hot, but if you don't want to believe us then that's your problem:rolleyes:

The fan is only necessary when you are travelling slow and when the engine is under heavy load like towing and climbing hills.

As you speed up the forward motion of the vehicle forces air though the radiator which cools the engine via the cooling system, when the vehicle slows down or stops the cooling air flow though the radiator is now caused by the fan rotating. If the engine is at normal running temperature the fan can idle (not totally locked up) as the viscous coupling feels the temperature raising it locks up and pulls more air though the radiator causing the temperature in the radiator drop thus cooling the engine....simples.

If you don't want a repair bill for a new radiator (after it splits), new cylinder head and loads of other problems, may I suggest you save up for a new viscous fan assembly......soon...

PS...I'd fit an OEM unit not worth cutting corners with this one, it'll bite you back later on if you don't.

That's funny,

Of course I know how the system works. Speed = wind.... Lol
What I don't understand is why my car overheats only some of the time and not always under the same conditions.

I'm going to have the aircon fans converted on monday with a inline pipe heat sensor and a three way switch, fans off, fans on with thermo sensor, fans on constant options.

Hopefully that will sort it.

For those of you who think I don't listen, think again.......lol

And once again thank you.

Mike.

i think im having a similar problem, although i've not had the car that long and i've noticed that the coolant after a longish trip is coming out the breather on the header tank.

Am i right in saying that the coolant system is not pressurised? as there is a bit of pressure in mine

over full ,poor rad feel all across core surface to ensure its all cooling, head gasket ,cracked head ,thermostat ,leak. not all head gaskets fail straight away sometimes they just leak slightly slowly pressurisng system

ah right, thats ok then, any ideas on for the coolant coming out the breather?
i dont think its the head as the rad pipes are still quite soft

Duff pressure cap or the cap is not screwed right down, they go tight before they are all the way down sometimes giving the impression that the cap is fully down.
