Hiya,

I have just bought a 1998 P38 2.5DSE after having searched the classifieds for a few weeks. To be honest my budget of £3000 was a bit low to be finding a minter and I looked at a few real dogs before buying this one. It is high mileage at 162K which really put me off it to begin with but it drove so well on the roadtest and looked right so i ended up offering £2700 for it and my offer was accepted.

I have owned many cars and my big hobby is classic mini's but this is my first ever 4X4 and first ever Land Rover. As with most older higher mileage P38's it does have it's faults but I am in the trade and can do most of the repairs myself. I am just amazed by how much infomation is about for P38's. I think everything I've found wrong so far someone has already experienced and found the solution or a quick fix. Parts dont seem to bad at all when you shop around a bit. Im gradually working through the bits that dont work and have so far given it a much needed full service, replaced the oil cooler pipes as they were leaking and got the interior lights working. I still need to replace both front central locking solenoids, sort out the hot start i.e cranks for about 4 seconds before it starts (found the hot start fix relay on ebay!) and have a look at the heater which I think has a faulty n/s blend motor.

So far im pleased with my purchase. I was never expecting to get a perfect one for £3k but after a bit more work I rekon I will have a fully operational P38 where everything works as it should for about £3200.

Hi. looks like you've done well there, if you like your range rovers, good you've got your hands screwed on the right way too...you'll be busy!

I really do feel that people put too much emphasis on mileage...it may have been driven by a sober vicar and serviced every month for all you know, or thrashed every day down the M6...you just have to try and find the signs that its basically sound, pay your money and take a punt, and to be honest its averaged what, 15k a year?? Thats quite normal.

Good luck, i hope you enjoy it, at the end of the day its something you want, you're happy for what you paid, and 3 grand is going to give you a lot of pleasure..What more do you need?
