My son was using the TD5 discovery today and at the end of a of a long hot day pulling a 2 ton trailer he hit a deer, as he was sorting it out he saw water coming out of bottom of engine, turns out it was a pipe split behind the turbo, I think nothing to do with the deer but very hot and stopping quick and maybe old pipe just decided to go at that time.
We had to tow it home but no big deal I have have two questions,
First is getting the bottom engine cover off at the side of the road was a real pig, has anyone adapted there's to make it easier,?
Other question, turbo has not been good for a bit and have been meaning to change it,as changing the pipe will be easier with turbo off seem good to do both at same time I have one off a old engine but has not been used for about 4 years, what should I look at and do before I fit it

Weird sh!t!
Bottom cover? Your TD5 is posh! Most don't seem to have em any more, mine certainly don't.
As to old turbo unit. I think they turn in oil filled bearings so they may well have a little bit of play but how much is too much, that I don't know. You could do worse than to take it off, replace the hose, bung the other turbo on and see if it is any better. Don't think it could do any harm to try it.
Best of luck anyway!:)

Thinking about the play in the bearings of the turbo, if you compare it to the play in the existing unit, if there is less then that ought to be a plus. but there may well be other factors involved i.e. damage to vanes etc to take into account.

Hi I would leave bottom cover off but it gets used a lot with the mini digger, we have a tipping trailer and use it to move soil around often in long grass and light scrub land and think that it needs a bit of protection, it is getting a bit tired now, 200 000 miles a lot of towing and is used as a van, but always been out here and chassis like new,

its a pig to get off as you need to remove front cross bar under the bell housing and then jack chassis up away from axle

Guy at the CT test centre (mot) said he thought the turbo was leaking, there is noise that sounds a bit like that it may be, but he did pass it, not sure about other turbo, it came off the old engine that was killed by the oil pump bolt coming lose so might have buggered the turbo, but could be okay

more likely manifold gasket leaking,i wouldnt fit the turbo from the oil pump lose engine

I thought about cutting it and fitting a metal plate above it with self tappers but seems a lot of work, for the sort of vehicle it is it is a bad design

If you've got away with 200k and no exhaust manifold warping you have been dead lucky it would appear. I sure didn't !:(
You and a @jamesmartin where right exhaust manifold gasket leaking I think manifold warped as the studs at both ends have broken I think they are going to be a pig to get out, I have a spare manifold on old engine that looks okay and was not leaking, I have changed water pipe for now as needed to use it today, my son drove 3 hours each way to pick up the pipe at 2€50 I thought we had a old one but turns out we didn't he did pick up some other bits including manifold gasket

Sorry to hear about the manifold. sounds nearly exactly the same as mine. And there are several threads on here about getting snapped off studs out.
The easiest bit is the manifold itself, just get it reground flat.
If you can't find the threads put that up and I'll have a look for you.
Best of luck with it all!:(:(:(

Have a look online may be on YouTube or on Garretts site where it shows the play in a turbo and it’s quite alarming how much they have when engine is off but once on and under oil pressure everything tightens up.
