Hi all my old girl was first reg 4/03/77 so in theory she is approaching 41 years young when can I have Historic road tax ? as Im getting conflicting advice, DVLA told me yesterday i could have it now so went to the post office with the relevant documents and there computer says no, so rang dvla up again and they now say I have to wait until 1 April 2018 but this would make it 41 year old, so Im confused but I know you guys will know thanks all
Cris

Hi I was told By the dvla to take my v5 to the post office and fill in section 7 to say i wanted to change the tax class from private light goods to historic, sign and date it. when she scanned it the computer said i didn't qualify for historic tax, the lady at the counter rang the dvla and they too confirmed I didn't qualify despite someone from there yesterday saying i did, So when I got home I rang them again this time they said I had to reapply on the 1 April 2018 but by then the land rover will be 41 years old so im not sure whats going on and to honest I dont think the dvla do either
Discool if yours was first reg in Sept 76 when did you get your Historic tax? as my girl is only 6/7 months younger than yours

As Christo says, you have to get the vehcile tax class changed on the V5 first, is must be changed to "Historic vehicle" so you need to submit a change request to the V5, its free but takes time. The DVLA will assign the "historic vehicle" class if it qualifies, they check. The Post office can't do this and they can't process the tax free if the vehicle is in a taxed class (ie PLG). At the moment (watch carefully) the tax rate for historic vehicles is £0 so once the taxation class is changed to "historic vehicle" you go throught he noraml tax renewal but pay £0. With historic vehicle classification comes exemption from the London Low Emssisons Zone and probably the various others planned (Bristol, Edinburgh?) but I fully expect £0 to turn into £5 or £10 in due course, its easy money for HMG.

The post office was able to change my tax class from Ambulance (exempt) to PLG.

They had to scratch their heads and call the boss to work out how but they managed so I don't see why any other change of class would be different so long as it's presented with the relevant evidence. Especially as that evidence for most is the V5 itself.

They said they could do it but when they scanned the v5 the computer wouldn't let them

Dunno then. Mines a bit more complicated because she was MoD so V5 says '98 which causes confusion at the MOT test. The Merlin report says she was first in service in July '78 and my tax is due in Aug....

I suspect that by the end of July I'll be shouting at people

I'm going to be patient until April 1 then I'm going to kick off as by then the old girl will be 41 and it clearly states this on the v5 I mean it's hardly rocket science it's counting for christ sake

I went to the post office today to change from PLG to historic. just took my v5c. Lady behind counter said she could not do it, but I insisted and she got her manager who said no problem its the same process as changing to disabled. he did it in seconds and gave me a receipt for a years free tax. He kept half the v5c to send to DVLA to be changed. so if you are refused and know you are entitled ask to see the manager as not everyone knows the procedure. my landy is a 1976 but has been off the road for about 20 years, just finished a 6 month rebuild and passed MOT yesterday with no faults

Intersting that some of you have been sucessful at the Post Office, I don't think they were able to change tax class in the past but that was when the DVLA regional offices were open, now they are closed it looks like the rules have changed. I bought a car registeed as disabled tax and could only get it changed by going to a regional DVLA office (now gone of course). My Series is 1970 but was on a 1978 reg (ex mil). While it was tax exempt it caused problems with car rallies and things that were for "historic vehicles" so I wrote the the DVLA and asked for an age correct reg, they did it for free, took about 6 weeks. This had the other benefit that I've gone from yellow to black plates.

I've a sneaking suspicion they are interpreting the law as when you have finished the end of the 40th year.
6 or 7 years to go till my 110 is qualified if they don't change the rules again...

it seams to be that the vehicle has to be 40 years old at the beginning of the January but you cant apply until the 1st April hence why mine will be 41 years old when its tax free, mine was first reg in March 1977 so it wasn't 40 at the beginning of 2017 so i have to wait until April 2018 for historic tax as it qualifies now cause it was 40 in Jan 2018 hope this makes sense theirs nothing like making it difficult is there
