Hill descent control

Hi all,

I am in Canada miles from a LR dealer with a Freelander that is acting up.
On startup the vehicle drives off normally and the automatic transmission operates normally but soon after moving off, the hill descent failure warning light comes on and the transmission locks into top gear.
I can select first gear and the vehicle stays in first, any other gear selected except reverse gives me top gear.

Can anyone help either with a diagnosis or failing that, can I disable the hill descent control so that it does not affect the transmission function?
