The transfer lever is very loose on the missus's 2003 TD5.
Although it works fine. The vehicle has done 120,000 miles.
Is it an easy job to fix? Although it works, l'm concerned about the amount of play in it compared to the one in my 80,000 mile 110 which is not loose at all.

If I remember right the yoke can break on the linkage, easier to take the tunnel off and have a look... check the clip at the bottom of the stick ...

As @Dippypud said, but it has to be said, all the linkages in the Hi-Lo mechanism are a tad loose, so have a good look at them all and tighten where you can. There's one piece that looks like a bent nail which can bend ... a bent nail, I'm told, can fix it better than OEM .. :)

Agree with that, the linkages are a pretty poor design so tighten up and lubricate where possible, theres an adjuster with a locking nut which may be loose.
It's a pig of a job to get the tunnel off I had to take the whole fuse box and relay mounts off to do it.
And the bent nail was seized solid on mine, tried to free it off but it snapped new one cost about £30

Your linkage will look a bit like this: (this is a 300Tdi Def, I think)

Piece of wire scientifically bent with pliers is pretty good too! :)

I keep meaning to take mine off my old Disco and work out a 'proper' linkage system with small rose joints ... when I get a few tuits ..

I've had totaly loss of control of the ratio while trying to get out of neutral and that left me semi stranded.

If you take out the 6 (I think) bolts holding the panel underwhich the lever enters the box (Green wire is on top of it in picture above) you'll find an allen key screw that can work loose and allow some play to work into the system before eventually letting the whole thing spin independently. Tighten it up and it will feel solid again. Another thing worth doing is making sure the plastic bushes are in place along the linkage system. FRC4499
