Hi all,
Gaz here - brand new to Landyzone!!!

I've always wanted a Defender - and I finally bought one in 2013. I don't do many miles but it's what I use for blatting around the back roads in Kent, and I love it.

I have a 2004 td5 - a 90 County XS. It is starting to look a little tatty - headliners, door cards all a bit saggy or loose. The side steps are rusted and need replacing. I thought I would sign up to browse the board and pick up some tips to tackle some of these things myself - budget is always a bit tight - I guess that's a problem many of us face!!

Looking further ahead I may have the wheels refurbed and painted and replace the grill and headlight mounts (maybe even the lights). Back in the past someone fitted forward facing rear seats - so any views on if this changes the value and if I might be better replacing the inward facing ones would be interesting too.
Any advice or useful threads on these topics that folks can point me to are gratefully received.....

Cheers!

Gaz.

Welcome to LZ, Gaz! :)

Td5 are quite a good motor, modern enough to have reasonable performance on road, old enough to be fairly cheap to run.
Personally I would just remove the steps and scrap them rather than replace. Painting stuff up is always a good idea, as is rustproofing.
No special techniques, just like painting any steel on the steel. Alloy body use etch primer first. Prep is always the key.
Try forum search and read around the build threads, there is a lot on the forum already about that sort of stuff.
