I have always dreamt of owning a land rover defender and i did once for about 2 weeks before it was stolen and found written off...I am now finally in the fortunate position of acquiring one. it has a 2.5 N/A engine in and i would like to change it to the 200TDI, would i have to change the gearbox or not. The Landy is a 1989 Defender 90 with a 2.5 N/A engine in with a turbo added at some point.

if someone could shed some light that would be much appreciated.

...need a lot more intel b4 I would say yea or nay...:eek::eek: I assume you have oil water electricity and it runs...runs well? no white smoke? no milkshake oil? it has power? What is the history? post pictures...
Drive it...then worry about fixing/changing it-"if it ain't broke...":nothingtoadd:

if you want to change to a TDI, why not just wait for a TDI to come along. There is plenty out there and it is serious work to change an engine and will cost you more in the medium term so unless you have a strong desire to replace an engine I woudl wait for a decent TDI to come along

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate that. what about fitting a Turbo to a NA engine? can it be done?

if you have some basic mechanical skills then a tdi swap will be your best bet imo, theres a guy called steve parker (on ebay or in magazines) he can supply you with a kit to make your life easy.

Thats great i really appreciate it. I do have a basic knowledge of mechanics a few of my friends are mechanics so hopefully between us all we should manage.
