Its the air filter housing. to remove it there are two allen bolts that you can see in the photo and three down the back which you will ideally need lonf "ball" ended allen keys. The three at the back can be awkward. The filter is inside.

Thanks for the reply I know it is a fliter housing but my question was. There is a hole in the side of the housing is it meant to be there?

I believe this hole is a drain hole for any water that gets into the air filter housing. It should be clear and unblocked.

Ok but wouldn't a drain hole be underneath not half way up the air filter housing. Surely it should all be sealed?

The hole as stated above is for a clip to carry wires within a sheath, but is used on the R75 M47 engine as below

Ours the FL as a different for holding the wiring sheath as here below.

Thanks for the replies I shall block this up then as there is no wiring nearby to clip in as I belive the extra wiring is for the fuel burning water heater?

My mistake, I should look at the picture closely before commenting next time. The small hole I was mistaking it for is right at the bottom of the housing. It does appear the hole you're worried about is just for a plastic clip as everyone else has said, and is absolutely nothing to worry about.
