Hi guys! I posted yesterday on the introduce yourself section as im a new member and wanted to say Hi!!

This landy business is all new to me, but hopefully with your kind guidance and help i should have one soon!

Idealy i would like a 90 300tdi or td5; and thats where my problem begins! I havent a clue! Been doing some some searches on here and have been following a number of rebuild threads ( some of the work is fantastic on here).

So which one to buy? cab or ones with windows in the back! I can hear some on here shouting 'The Idiot Doesnt even know what there called' well you would be right!

Oh! my names steve by the way and i live on the 'ROCK' known as the Isle of man, or as none manx like to call it Alcatraz!:)

Anyway back on point, any help and advice would be welcome even if its 'search the bloody forum stupid'!

is it ok to post up 90's for sale (ebay-gumtree) for guys on here to give the once over?

oh and im looking to spend about £4000 on a basic 90 i can change over time!

Do you beleive if fate or luck? A story from last night! Ive been trying to sell a load of MG Midget parts for about a year now and have had no luck. Then last night a fella turned up in a Land Rover 90 with a disco engine in it! any we talked more about his many land rovers than my parts! Thats got to be a sign surely!! He'd just sold a 90 td5 for £2000 deduced from £7000! Dohhhh...:(

Hi Steve.

Solid metal back is called the hardtop and the ones with windows are the known as the County but you get a lot of hard tops with windows fitted.

The 300tdi and TD5 are both good engines, I have had a 300tdi Disco and have a 300tdi Disco retrofit into my 1990 90.

It depends on your thoughts on maintenance - 300tdi is electrics free so repairs are all spanners and sockets, with the TD5 it is possible for it to die on you if a sensor fails - then again unless you are off on some major overland adventure it's just the same as any car breaking down really. I know people who are entirely against electrics so don't like the TD5 - if you lived in deepest darkest Mongolia I would say 300tdi all the way.

I would probably suggest looking for a TD5, it's going to be newer and a better choice of original vehicles going about.

Thanks for the reply! Td5 sound great but as you say the 300tdi is electronic gadgit free. May opt for that i think! Are there any years to avoid? I suppose the years to avoid have prob been updated or repaired so infact you dont need to avoid if that makes sence!

Do you think any kind members would go and look at a 90 im interested in if its near them? cost to much for me to keep leaving the island to be let down! or are there people that do pre inspections on land rovers?

anyway thanks for the info....

he means electronics, 300tdis have lights :D

personally, i'm a no electronics guy in a fender and I agree with the above.

if you buy a td5 you can always carry spare sensors and hard to find items if you go on expeditions.

thanks for the link for the guide!

My other question was im i allowed to post land rovers for sale from ebay-gumtree so you guys can have a look and tell we what you think?

for you to buy? don't see what not.

people only get shirty when people try to flog their stuff ;)

If you opt for a 300tdi your money will go further,

a TD5 is more refined and less agricultural,

I personally prefer a 300tdi, but i'm biased,

If your mechanically savy a 300tdi will last you a long time, and you can run it on veg oil

No worries

Yes the guys will comment, but only so much you can see from photos

With Defenders you need to be able to hit the chassis with a hammer!!

Thanks for the info!
Yes sorry, i mean defender to buy for you guys to have a look at.
Hopefully if i find one close to a forum member they could go and hit it with a hammer! i'd pay them for the trouble obviously!

Need some guys that know more than me to comment

10p I thought was the more troublesome TD5 engine (cylinder head cracking) - the later 15p had metal dowels and was stronger?

Always honest people out there, but as ever need to be careful when parts are swapped about to make sure you're not buying something iffy

Originally would (should) have been a 200TDi if a 1991 - snorkel is on wrong side for that, suggesting panels have been changed as well as chassis and engine!

Think i'd be wanting to see loads of receipts, not just the engine one!!!!

I did nearly 100k in my Td5 (disco) and the only things that went tits on the engine was the fuel pressure reg and oil in the ecu from injector harness, both a **** to fix! I would still have if it hadn't been branded by bint in car with 4 rings on the front who was trying to warp into another dimension.

Cant remember how many mile i did in the 300 probably less than half that but that never once let us down, basic bob but cant argue the reliability

Regards
Lee

sorry for yet another one but the sooner i buy one the sooner i can stop pestering you lovely people!

LEZ is London ' s Low Emission Zone. Older smokers are not allowed in and have to be converted. Not a problem on IOM I guess.

I would consider buying on general condition and bear in mind one day you might need to rebuild/ replace the engine. Not a big job on an old diesel.

I have A defender td5 2001 81,000 on the clock , not a murmer out of the ecu even after some heavy off roding and deep water.
Cracking engine just do your oil drops regular and keep an eye n the coolant.
