Hello everyone!

I bought a 2000 TD4 Auto 5 door Freelander a few months ago.

So far the driving experience has been great. However, it seems to be a bit of a lemon, since it has has HGF failure. Probably (in my ignorant opinion) due to the "full service" made when I got it. The coolant in the expasion bottle was way above the max level and it started to crack.

Anyway, this is a great forum and I hope that I maintain reasons (owning a Freelander) to keep on visiting and posting :)

December?? why December?

which part do you go to? let me guess.. Algarve? lol

Yep the Algarve, My parents live down there. We drive down from Bilbao int the 110 so have a bit of a wander too.:D:D

haaa.. cool!

From Bilbao hey? so you are brave enough to be 30 something hours in a ferry then... hats off to you!

I just can't do that, on the first couple of years living here I used to drive down, but going Calais, Paris, Tours, Bordeux, going past near Bilbao, Burgos... and then here depending where I'm going I take a different route... If I go to Lisbon (where i'm from) I cut across straight to Portugal, if I go to the Algarve I keep going down to Madrid-Cordoba-Sevilla...

What route do you take once in Bilbao?

I don't do it anymore, last time I drove there I left the car there to be sold (had PT plates and I had a uk car here), so now I just fly.

Last time we went across the top of Spain and down past Porto and Lisbon down to the Algarve . Came back through Seville Madrid way....think we'll go down the Madrid way this year, even though tha way is very dull. Its all flat and the scenery is all the same. We were tempted to go through France, i have done it before. I did it on the way back a few years ago, made the mistake of going over the Pyrenees at 11 at night.....was a little bit misty.

If you want to take a nice scenery route through Portugal (Porto to Lisbon is rubish, nothing to see…)
From Bilbao head to Burgos, then Valladolid and then Salamanca.
From Salamanca head to Guarda (in Portugal now), from here down to Castelo Branco and then you are off Mways or dual carriage ways and you have to go on A roads, but keep going south to Estremoz, from here head West to Evora and from Evora head South to Beja.
South of Beja you have a beautiful natural park…

all this route takes you through the East of Portugal and the north is great with mountains, green areas, etc….

have a look on google maps.. here's a route, but as I don’t know where in the Algarve you are heading to, I've ended the route halfway there.

from:A-8 to:IP2 to:37.670777,-7.706909 to:N393 - Google Maps

hope it helps if you feeling adventurous... you won't be disappointed with the views... and food along the way!

Yeh we might try and split the route up this year, possibly stop off for a day somewhere... It was a longish dive last time in one go hehehehehe especially with a wife and 2 kids in tow
