I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice .I brought the disco 2 td5 on ebay and the owner said it might have a head gasket issue as it uses water when its running water comes out of the expansion bottle overflow but there are no bubbles in the water the system seems under pressure i plan to do the head gasket and skim the head . Is it best to use genuin lr parts as there are lots of pattern parts out there i have also had trouble with the manual gearbox engaging gear i have ordered a new master cylinder slave cylinder and pushrod i hope that sorts it coming from a pajero to lr i have been supprised how big the discos are many thank les

Using water could be down to several causes other than the head gasket. Check for other signs of gasket failure before assuming the previous owner actually knew what they were talking about. Is there any oil in the coolant? Is there any “mayonnaise” in the oil filler cap (water emulsified in the oil)? Is there any white “smoke” from the exhaust when running? (This is actually steam where coolant is leaking into the bores of the engine).

Have you had a really good look around the engine bay for coolant leaks? When cold and when at running temp? Also from reading other posts, there is a bleed hole in the water pump that will spit water out when the engine is running (above tick-over speed, ie get someone to hold the throttle at 2-2500 rpm and look). I believe you can get UV reactant dye that you can put in the coolant and use a UV torch to assist in finding leaks which may be worth doing.

Changing the head gasket is a big job to do if it’s not definitely the cause and the actual fault is just a leaking radiator/hose.....

Hi thanks for the a advice its nice to talk to people who know the landrovers the disco is not overheating but it is pressurising the coolant system after a short while and it is passing water out of the expanion tank overflow. The strange thing is the oil is nice and clean and there is no oil in the water or creamy oil in the oil filler and there is no bubbles in the coolant tank but apart from the expansion tank i cannot see any coolant dripping strange.I will check the exhaust for steam this week and inspect all of the hoses i was wondering if a broken thermostat might pressurise the coolant system .Many thanks for the advice

HI,

Before doing anything else, I would replace the cap on the expansion tank, they are known for failing and allowing the coolant to come out of the small black pipe.

Cheers

Hi spot 1 many thanks for the help you said about checking the engine bay for leaks funny thing was i have replaced the clutch master and slave cylinder and as i was laying under the car i could feel water dripping on me from up in the engine so that might mean no head gasket change and i will check the water pump this weekend as well many thanks les
