ive just been driving down the duel carriage way and all of a sudden my rear diff started making a loud winning noise.I pulled over and my rear prop has come out of the diff about a inch.Is this a common fault and if so what is the replacement or does it need a new diff any help would be really appreciated thanks

ive just replaced the rear dough nut as that had split and its come out of the diff casing

possible bolt has come loose holding flange on pinion or pinion snapped ,bolt is under spigot which is a tight fit in flange ,8mm set screw wound through will push it off ,check prop slide isnt seized

the prop has not seized as managed slide it nearly all the way back in i.I have left it where it is untill the morning. Is the pinion pin a easy change i am a general mechanic just never bothered with land rovers untill i started green laning.I know they are a front loading diff and to remove you need take both half shafts and rear prop then remove the pins from around the casing.Just unsure what am going find in there as its something i have never messed with.Am i best taking it to another garage or should i be able fix it my self just dont want make it any worse

if pinion has broken you will need another diff as would be cheaper than a new crown wheel and pinion,if bolts come loose then you might get away with refastening

ok mate thank you very much. Will strip it down in the morning .I have not lost drive would i loose drive if the pinion had snapped

hi mate thanks for that last night.I stripped it down and found that the center nut had come undone and the bearings had collapsed.I managed get a recon diff and at the same time converted it to a 4 pin prop instead of the 3 with the dough nut so the dough nut has been removed so no more proplems with that in the future
