Hi all , I'm Pete and live in Burnley, I have a 2003 freelander with all the usual wrong with it , boot dont open but did, electric windows dont work etc etc however yesterday its started running really rough is lacking power and is bellowing black smoke under load or 3000rpm plus , any ideas what this could be please and a rough idea of cost , it's the last thing I need when I've spent up for xmas , any answers greatly appreciated thanks ...merry xmas

If it is a TD4 then almost certainly the turbo intercooler hoses. If it is a petrol it sounds buggered!!

Remove engine cover, if it has one, most likely suspect is either if the large rubber hoses at front end of car. Not the coolant hose from the radiator, but there is a long one on the drivers side and an elbow on the passenger side. Poke them and you'll probs find a tear, sometimes they rub on the fixing screws holding the plastic pipes in place. Good luck. Put the type and age of car in your information, that helps us help you.

Thanks for your reply Andy, it's a 2003 freelander td4 station wagon

Thought so!
Put the details of your vehicle in your profile information to save keep putting it in the post. More useful than your birthday!!! ;)

Hi Pete
As above check the hoses in the photo's below, it would be best to change them to silicone ones if you can, the most suspect one will be the one at the front it can rub on a clip behind & under it.

Bless you pro ...I'm afraid it may have got much worse since yesterday , being the excellent mechanic I am ...not !! I dipped oil yesterday morning and it was probably 0.5 to 1cm under guide level so I put a small oil in to top up , I live in Burnley and work In clitheroe but have no other car so used it despite smoking as like you guys said probably a split hose so wouldnt be too bad , its 14 mile each way and half way there yesterday morning it was still smoking and struggling to go above 3000 rpm and 40-50 mph , so put oil in at clitheroe before work , finished work last night and drove home and it was horrendous 15mph up hills chugging , when in neutral it was missing that bad the whole car was rocking including me , it just smoked and smoked all way back to Burnley got worse and worse throughout the journey , got it home just tried to reverse into parking spot and it didnt like that, cut out 3x in reverse , tried starting this morning as I had a feeling it wouldnt start and sure enough it's dead, turns over but sounds ****e like its lacking oomph to start , I'm lost really , all I know is it was running fine on Friday the mrs took it to Manchester shopping and got stuck in motorway traffic for long periods on way back , then I drove it next morning and noticed smoking and lack of power and now it got worse and worse to the point it's dead 24hrs later , it's done probably 50 miles whilst smoking all together and now its fooked , would split hoses cause such a dramatic failure or adding oil to it , i put my hand under one of the hoses pictured the elbow/s shaped one to the right of the engine and my hand was covered in oil from rubbing the underneath ... only had car a few months , no money now for weeks due to xmas and next payday weeks away , all in all i feeling mighty gutted about now , thanks for getting back to me all of you it's much appreciated honestly .Pete

If it's losing oil, then it's possible the turbo oil seal has failed. If this is the case, then don't drive it until it's been to a garage to check. Oil in the intake can result in diesel runaway, which destroys the engine in most cases.

Mmm that sounds grim , so its possibly a scrapper then , reading that made me sweat ...ooh the stress, I got to be honest it ran and sounded that bad last night coupled with the fact it wouldnt start today has me really worried , not sure if its leaking oil I've never noticed any on drive or anything

If there is oil outside the rubber pipe it does sound like it is ripped. But as Nodge says, shouldn't be much oil there, a drop or two.

Worth taking the elbow off and post a photo. Agree, don't start it until you are sure the turbo seals haven't gone.

Just had a quick look and I've over filled oil now by an inch so gonna have to get that out , that could be why it was so much rougher on way home I'm a dik

Just check the hoses. It's possible you had a small tear that has opened up with driving. I had one pop off completely once. Same thing, making smoke like a destroyer being pursued by a battleship and 15-20MPH on hills. Depending on how it has been driven in the past, there could be a fair bit of oil in the intercooler and hoses - particularly if it's never been thrashed. Don't despair just yet. Check the simple things first!

So is it possible that it's not losing oil? If that's the case, then look for a split in the boost pipes. The ones each end of the plastic cross pipe (top 3 pictures above) are the common ones to fail.

Suck out oil so it is about 5ml below the maximum mark, you have to check those hoses asap, take them off and check them all over, EGR could be sticking but as above simple items first.

Andy I have over 25,000 photo's of the M47 engine R40 & FL1 mixed so maybe not :D;)
I also have a huge inventory of vehicle photos, pretty much all of them are in my head  i.e. I know I have the pictures. However I'm finding that actually locating the picture I need is becoming very difficult, simply due to the sheer number of pictures I need to look through.
