Hi all just got myself my first landrover ,its a series 3 petrol 1984 lwb,i am thinking of converting it to a diesel.GOOD IDEA OR BAD ?i have a 2.5 diesel that needs a set of rings what do you all think as i am new to this ,the truck is a project for my son and i to do a bit of offroading and when my son passes his test it will be his .

GOOD idea.

Rebuild the diesel engine. Good fun. Learn lots.

Double the miles per gallon.

Use veg oil or biodiesel.

Way to go.

What, if anything, is wrong with the petrol? I would want a good reason for taking a good engine out.
How many miles do you envisage doing, bear in mind, although an improvement on the petrol, the diesel is not what most people would call economical.
What diesel have you got. The 2.5 (Land Rover Type) diesel fitted in the Sherpa (and some taxis) fits a series motor far easier that the one out of a Land Rover, BUT it is not so suitable for extreme off roading as the fronmt timing cover isn't waterproof so deep wading will not do the timing belt any good!

A roll cage is there for safety reasons, function before form is the important thing to consider. Not much use if it just looks pretty when the vehicle rolls over..........internal/external, full/short, so many variations to be considered..........material types!. Have a look through the mags and you will see whats available.

I have some 60mm thick wall tube that will be bent to shape as soon as i can come up with a safe and good looking cage,i was looking for a external cage.

What grade is the tube?....you will have to calculate the total weight of the finished frame and make a judgement if that is what you really want. For sure, hanging a 150 kilo's of additional mass up and over the top of the vehicle will reduce the stability of the vehicle on slopes and then consider the engine performance with essentially carrying the equivalent of another two adults.
I am all for safety, and agree roll cages in series vehicles used for off-roading are essential, but am just cautioning that the end solution should not introduce new problems. You would have to inform your insurance company, and for use on public roads may have to provide type approval.
