ello fellas , think this is the section for me picking up me r/rover tomorrow just like to ask for some advice ,its a 1990 3.9 v8 classic , 2 owners has 50p size bit of rust to deal with, near mint wax oiled no rot full history, just had full service at last mot 2 months ago sounds good, but is there anythink i should look out for (ie) wats prone to go wrong on these vehicles (often) just so i know wat to look for or work i could carry out myself general maintenance any help would be great thanks andy .;)

I've got a 1992 3.9, i think that the main, recurring, things are the seat ECU, heater fan only working on high speed (knackered ballast resistor) and central locking actuators, oh yes make sure the gearbox engages cleanly with no clonks going into reverse from drive when warm.

well picked up me beast today absolute fun machine smooth drive from luton to liverpool home very cool, guy just fitted new police spec springs shocks (is this good )gave the interior my own clean to my own standards smelling fresh now goes up an down gears very smooth only minor glitch sure i can hear a ticking noise when revving ? any ideas can see this bieng a good investment fingers crossed though saying that its cheaper to tax an insure this beast than it was to insure my last car lol c ant be bad

good idea! i too had a 1990 3.9 vouge SE in mint, then it went end over end, front over back with me in it! keep away form silly steap hills and it will stay the same shape for longer.
 
ticking could be the hydraulic tappets, try an oil change first before diving in to change them or you could just turn the radio up :D
 
the car just had full service done ,fella said he put synthetic in it (this right ?)
also quik one for you ,car has just cut out twice on me when bieng driven and stopping at lights any ideas what this could be air flow meter perhaps ?
 
I think fully synthetic is probably a bit thin for the age of engine and could be the cause of the noisy tappets if it is them.
 
does sound a bit tappety i think but then am just loving the noise from this v8 lol ,starting to worry me the cutting out buisness any ideas just dies instantly funnily enough when it has been turning a corner ??????
