anyone know What are the lanes like from hitchin to luton, seen them on the map but not been down there

Very easy, but can be a bit scratchy. The two tough ones have been resurfaced.

anyone know why the lane off clothal road has been gated, but still says public byway and is still shown as one on the new OS maps, it goes from baldock to nearish to walken

If it's locked ring local council and ask why if its illegally locked they may be able to open it or prosecute the person that has gated it J
