Alright fellas, so im after some opinions, I want to teach myself to weld, what do you think? should i buy a gasless mig and have at it in the garage with some offcuts ive got or should i try arc or should i go and do a course? i've read that Mig is easier, but Arc is more useful for larger things? what do you reckon?

Lee I've got a little mig here if you wanna have a play

If you do go Mig forget anything less than 140a and get gas that way you can run both gas and gassless wire. Co2 is cheap enough around here getting argoshield is more expensive but the difference is a much nicer weld and the argoshield doesnt cool the weld pool down so you can use a lower Amp mig machine to weld the same thickness steel or if you get a more powerful welder turn it up run co2 and it not be quite as tidy. It teally is an art and sad to say I can weld ish stick buts I need to stick together but Andy puts me to shame same machine every time. Nothing like experience in this case.

Don't go gasless they are ****. It depends on what you are thinking of welding. Anything thinner than about 3-4mm then mig.

I might take you up in that mate, shall we talk about it at the pub on weds?

Went out for a walk today, just a little stroll around a rec near my house and I found this. Some little guys had had a right good joyride by the looks of it. Knocked down a load I goal posts on the local football pitches and then torched it by the looks. Just another reason why I hate people.

Absolutely mate. Little chav tossers I guess. Thing is you can't find your way to where it was unless you know the area. There's a pikey camp next door. Not that I am casting aspersions.

Stu that welder is cheap!! Question for you as its that cheap if mine goes pop I'd consider one of them! What's it like on 6mm? Duty cycle it says u can run big bottles and 5kg wire which is good!

I am running a 5kg wire wheel and big bottle. I have never welded thick steel, thicker than about 4mm as I have never needed to, also have 2 big arc welders I use for that. But I have never needed to run it at full power yet either. I'm still getting used to MIG but use it at work for small stuff.

Hi all,

Just introduced myself to the forum, St Albans based and looking to play with my recently acquired Discovery 2 on some mild/moderate lanes.

Is the pub meet open to all?

Hello and welcome, yup the pub meet is open to all. This coming Wednesday, come along and have a chat. I've done most of the lanes around your way some of them are good fun :)

Has anybody been into the little area on Lye Lane in St Albans?

If you are talking about the area just off m25 J21a don't do it. It's private land and illegal.
I See the Herts Rural police unit loitering around there more often than not.

Steer clear !!

Welcome!!

The best advice I can give if if you et chance grab an OS map before the pub meet and Brin some highlighters!! We can mark all those that we know are legal for you

See you at te Pub!! J

Yeh, as far as i'm aware it's someone's land but I was told about it earlier in the week saying people go down there quite a bit and my friend has even gone past and seem people having a BBQ whilst in there.

I guessed it wasn't a proper road/route etc.

Looking forward to meeting you all on Wednesday.
Anybody coming with a Disco V8?
