Yeah, Looks bigger with it still being in the chassis.
As above nothing to video it even if I did start it on the drive.
Oh and yes it has a lot of potencial

I didn't mean liberate as such, Just need a decent supplier as I'm sure I'll need quite a few bits and bobs.

Well not a lot done today.

Made an order with Lr Direct, Always surprises me how fast the bill goes up, £350 for what was mainly little bits, set of springs, Assorted nuts, Bolts, Washers, Gaskets and seals etc.

Other 90 is now being used as a storage facility.
All front axle bits cleaned and painted, Just need to wait for my delivery and it can go back together.

one thing that does concern me about these engines is the weight, you reckon a basic engine crane is suitable for lifting one? mine was making some noises with just the 300 on it and i assume these are a fair chunk heavier. on another note axle looking good, wont be long till your chucking these things together with your eyes closed

I quite like the "old toolbox" red effect there

I've come to like the red oxide colour. I think its stockholm syndrome rather than an actual likeness for it.

I think you should put a few coats of the original red on to match the panels. Once it's altogether the red gear underneath will not look so loud I hope

Aaron, I'll be reading your thread with great interest. I've been toying with the idea of one of these engines for a while. Read loads of threads about the conversions. I think it's probably beyond my ability. I'm interested to see what sort of adapter you come up with to couple it.

I like the red you came up with - looks good.

I got a 2 ton crane from SGS 2 Ton Professional Folding Hydraulic Engine Crane/Hoist/Lift . It showed no signs of stress at the furthest extension (1/2 ton) with my 200 TDI. I could probably have done it at the next extension in which is rated for 1 ton.

To be honest I was very concerned about the engine crane coping, But today has proven me wrong. Engine and box is about 700kg

I'm much the same as you, Always thought I want to do one, one day, Just decided f*ck it and went for it, Engine coming up cheap was the deciding factor though. Or it'd have just had a tdi put in it and sold.

And I'm thinking it may be beyond my ability at the moment, But I'm all up for learning new things.

As for the adaptor I haven't got a clue at the moment. I'm might have to get someone to make it depending what I decide.

But that doesn't bother me to be honest. Engine was cheaper than most so can afford to put a few quid into it, Plus money isn't that much of a factor as it's something I'll never want to sell. Well it is but I'm sure you know what I mean

There really is a business opportunity for someone that can put together a package of all the bits: engine mounts, 12/24v adapter for starter, adapter plates, throttle cable, gearbox to transfer box adapter shaft etc etc

I'd quite like to build one of these as well. When you can pick up a Leyland DAF 45 with engine and box for £500-800 or even less and then sell off the rest of the bits and scrap it would be rude not to

Oh I most definitely agree, I would buy one if their was one on the market.
Be a nice job knocking them up, But I have neither the tools or the knowhow to do it.
But hopefully by the end of this I'll know the conversion inside out. I know my brother wants a 6bt as well so that'd be another one to have a go at

You see everyone told be you can find DAF 45's cheap, Cheapest I found was £750.
But that fell through. Bloke was meant to be delivering it.
Rang me up saying someone has stabbed a hole in the fuel tank so he can't start it. But I've got another one at the side of it that's getting chopped up.
(I'd already told him I only wanted it for the engine and box)
Said he wanted £450 for it and do I want to view it.
Went down, Had a look, Saw it running, Gave him a deposit, He took the cab off and cut the chassis in half the next day and delivered it the day after.

Probably worked out easier for me this way than trying to get rid of the rest, Seen as I only work on my drive at home.

Well I lifted the engine out of the DAF chassis today. Something which I was dreading as I've got to drag it a fair distance to the garage.

Anyway, I lifted the engine up, We tried to drag the engine crane but the engine kept getting caught on the chassis, So decided I'd pull the chassis from underneath the engine.
So attached a rope to brothers 90 and pulled it out

And dragged it all the way from up there Not the easiest of tasks on a cobley concrete driveway. Although the biggest problem was it kept wanting to going into the grass in the middle.
Got **** wet through in the process but I wanted it out over the weekend.
I must say I was impressed at how well the engine crane managed. Didn't even make any funny noises

That is one serious lump! Are you going to clean it up/paint the block etc before it goes in? It doesn't look like there will be much space once it is in. It would be interesting to see it against a 300Tdi

It also looks like your next door neighbour has been working on that camper in the driveway. I think you should complain to the council about them, lowering the tone.

Great work once again, I have 2 Leyland daf 45 one a horse box the other is a storage for the farm but only has about 80000 on the clock hadn't started it for 3 years started first time last week amazing engines.

There wont be a lot of space and will have to cut the bulkhead tunnel out.
Not got a 300tdi to hand, But theirs an old td under that green tarp
Oh and I forgot to say, Yes the engine will be getting painted, Think I'll keep it red, But theirs no rush to make that decision.

Hasn't been touched since last summer.
But yes before that he was painting it. Albeit with a rattle can. When next door but 1 complained last year I said well he's painting his camper, Got no real reply. So one rule for one and another for someone else.
F*ck 'em, Theirs no mediating with them, They just want to shout at me.
And think I'll just give in.

Aaron, how are you planning to mount it and how far forwards are you planning it to go. With an electric fan there is still a nice sized gap in front of the 300TDi so you could probably gain a little space that way.

I wonder how many mpg you can get with it in the defender and if you can run the Cummins on veg oil
