hi everyone hope you can help i have a p reg discovery tdi and its making a horrible whinning noise also hard to move, asked a garage and they said its either the diff lock or the transmission. talked to a freind and he said it might be theres no oil in the diff lock or transmission and i had to check it from underneath. he lives a long way away and can,t help, when i asked him to show me where to look on his one he just laughed because i,m a woman big help can anyone out there explin so i can look.

The diff lock is the small lever next to the gear stick. What are you gonna do once youve looked?

thanks beast will look and yes goonarmy i do know what the diff lever looks like dont patronize please

Where are you, roughly?

Is it manual or automatic gearbox? Might be worth checking that the handbrake's not stuck on, that diff-lock isn't engaged, that there are UJ's on the propshafts and that they're not bound up, that the wheels can move freely, that the brakes aren't seized, that the wheel bearings aren't seized ... there's so many things it could be ... and a lack of oil shouldn't make it hard to move unless it's already been moving for a time without any oil already!

How you getting on Lindsay? Where in the country are you? It's allers nice to work on these beasts (NOT BoB) with a mate to swear at / laugh at / electrocute as you go through the work so if you are near anyone I'm sure you coudl get any help you need (although sounds like you got is sussed already)

If ye've got an lt77 gearbox, then the filler plug is the square clean lookin' thing (up to the right a bit of my finger)....

Take it out and stick yer finger in to see if it touches any oil. If not then spour some in untill it runs out;)

If ye want to check yer transfer box oil....

That was my first thought; get under her and see if the h/brake drum rotates freely; if not it's binding inside; follow the distructions in the book of lies to see if you can free it up, and then adjust accordingly.
