I have a Freelander 1 (R Reg) - love it to bits but...i have an issue in that my key fobs have just stopped working, my key doesn't seem to fit the door lock so i have it sat on my drive locked and alarmed with no way of getting into to it...i have tried the re-set on the key fob (battery out / replace and the push button in quick succession but this hasn't worked even with new batteries. So it looks to me the only way is to smash a window and unlock from inside - alternatively someone has offered me new key fob for £55 each - anyone have any ideas...?

Smashing a window won't work if the car was locked with the fob. If locked with a fob, the doors are deadlocked so the inside door release won't work. If synchronizing the fobs (press the lock button 5 times in quick succession) doesn't work.
This leaves getting key lock free with something like WD40.

Edited to match the owners handbook.

The fobs are coded to the car - so once you have bought 1 it has to be programmed into the car using a device with the capability before it will work.

Unusual that both fobs would just stop working. When the batteries start getting low you will hear a series of beeps from the dash well before the batteries die.

I imagine your security computer has got "confused" (which can often be reset by disconnecting the battery for a while) or the IR pickup has failed.

When you say the key "doesn't seem to fit the door lock" have you ever used the key in the lock?

Think carefully before deciding to break a window! What are you trying to achieve? Unless it is to retrieve your children or pets suffering in the summer heat - it may just be an additional cost to replace after you have called the auto-locksmith.

just a thought, but might it be that the car battery is flat? i believe that you can connect jump leads to the alternator connections under the car to check that the battery is not flat. like i said, just a thought.
Can you see the LED blinking on the dash to say the car is secure?

I know the locks probably need more power than an LED, but it if is flashing there is enough power for the security computer to function.

The driver's door key is a mechanical device. So it doesn't need the battery to have power for the door to unlock.

It's not unheard of for the radio receiver to fail, which is mounted on top of the Ipack.

Hi All, thanks for replies - yes the LED is blinking, no i have never used the key to get into the car but it doesn't seem to fit the lock but have covered it in WD40 and will retry today - i need to get into the car to be able to disconnect the battery to hopefully re-boot everything unless anyone knows of way to get under the bonnet without pulling the release lever...?

If you search on here, I'm sure there is at least 1 thread that describes opening the bonnet if the release cable has snapped - same scenario I think.

There are ways to get the bonnet open, although you'll not find that information on an open forum.

Disconnecting the battery probably won't help, as there's nothing to reboot, except the tail door window The rear window would normally go all the way down. However I not 100% sure if the window will drop, if the vehicle is locked. Thinking about it, it could well be a way into the vehicle, if the window does drop down though. ;)

R Reg - that's an early one ?

My '99 decided it was going to immobilise itself. The computers just shat themselves and got their knickers in a twist. It was at a time when the starter motor was dieing and probably sent a load of spikes through the leccy circuits.

Disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours reset them and it was fine after that.
