Yesterday I was driving my 300 tdi discovery when I noticed the oil light come on so I investigated lifted up the the bonnet and to my horror oil everywhere so spanners out and checked out all the usual suspects. Everything was tight and no leaks from any joints so I filled up and started the engine as I'm looking I found the leak its if you facing the drivers side wing looking at engine if you follow the second head bolt (from filler cap going towards back of engine) down on to the engine block there is a machined hole it's coming from there in fact there are three holes in a row can any one tell me why the car is leaking oil from here and what are these holes here for and should I block it up thanks .
John

If I'm understanding you correctly, they are factory holes for the camshaft bearing machining or at least they are on a 200. Degrease and a blob of rtv is what I did.

Yes they are factory drilled holes they have some sort of thread in in too any ideas why oil is coming out of them when I'm driving losing all oil in less then 1/4 mile cheers John

It's the only way the machinist can drill the oilways for the camshaft bearing iirc. No thread that I recall.
LR fill the holes with rtv. Just seal them back up with rtv.
Put a pic up to make sure we're singing from the same hymn sheet.
If you poke the other non leaky holes you should feel the rubbery plug, nail or something pointy will do.

Here's mine it just to the left of my breather pipe

Here's a pic of same holes on a fresh engine under the second head bolt from filler cap there's a brown strip next to it on the engine case it self

Nope, camshaft bearings, you see where your lift pump bolts on? That's operated by the camshaft.
On the 200tdi them holes are filled with rtv, 300tdi might use a different method like a screwed plug ,its possible if you can see a thread I guess?
Whatever the method used its a simple cheap fix.
James Martin on here will know if you PM him.

Cheers buddy I didn't want to block them just in case I do something sinister to the engine I give your mate a nudge see what he thinks once again thank you

When the car is stationary and you Rev it the oil disappears back into the block let revs off it like weeps out but when it under load driving within second my oil light on oil every where there's no stange noises it purrs away and revs up really well if cam bearings have gone wouldn't there be other signs
