help with spot wiring loom

Hi Gary I have the same harness as you so that's why I know what connectors fit onto the add on harness for the lamps :)

Using the superseal connectors means you can use any lamp and do a fly lead from the add on harness you've bought to whatever lamp you choose to use.

Your a diamond, that's great thks so much.

Erm you don't know what plug I need for inside do you please,

When the wire is pushed through from the passenger side it then plugs into a 4 x wire white plug, this lead then goes behing the dashboard

But because this is a LHD loom it will be too short so that's the one I need to extend, so thought the easiest way was to get 2x. Four wire plugs with a 4 core piece of wire and could then simply plug it inbetween the 2 x looms I've alreay gotn

So will then be hopefully easy to fit

Also may I be cheeky on the smaller loom there seems to be a single wire that is shown going up to the fog light switch on the instrument panel , don't know what its for

Thanks so much and cannot begin to thank you for all the great help

Gary

hiya

thks again, may i ask another daft question, after spending time and going through the booknetc, ive got H1 and H4 loom, the H4 small loom is the one i need to extend , however there isna waire that goes up to the rear fog light switch and it shows i have to pull the switch out in section 57 and says i have to connect into the red and orange wire,

so with this information does that mean i have to fit 2 fog lights and 2 driving lights please

also there is a different connection colours between the 3 x smaller looms shown in the book,

the h4 loom ive got is part number stc53049 which is the one i need to extend, but it differs from the h2 as i know thats the rhd , part no. stc 53068 as the ones in number 3 & 4 terminals are different, not sure if u still have ur book on the installation instructions.

thks again and very grateful for your help, sorry its being a bit of a pain, but have really learnt a huge amount from u guys,

i didnt know i was allowed to fit fogs that high,

im also a volunteer member of a rescue organisation and also going to fit some orange flashing lights and as i will have 2 x spare switch holes thought i may wire something in there so its neat and tidy

ive included a link and hopefully you may be able to tell me what that extra wire is for going to and if i have to fit fogs and driving or all driving,

Hi unsure on the white connector - I extended the wires using a soldered joint - easier and cheaper.

The black and red single cable is for the illumination feed so you can take this from anywhere that has an illumination feed already.

The one feed (grey plugs from memory) is for the front fog lights and are switched on when the lights are on.

The other (green plug from memory) is main beam operated and can be manually switched off.

On the V6 models then they mounted fogs at the same level as the driving lights so you should be ok with fogs that high as long as they are adjusted ok

hiya,

really appreciate the help and like you say is going to be easier to solder the joints

with the fogs does when u turn the fronts on does the fog warning light come on or does it only come on with the rear

thks about also telling me where that one wire goes

been trying to find the lights mounting position laws are so when i mount the fogs and spot they are all in the right position

as im going to mount 4 x brackets instead of the 2

thks so much again

The only warning is on the switch for the front fogs - the one on the dash doesn't illuminate.

You mounting on the bumper bar using the brackets this stick out the grille? Might be too high for fogs - issue is that you can switch the lights on manually with dip beam so not ideal for spot lights.

the freelander fogs normally mount inside the bumper ( there is places for them on the back of the bumper it shows you where to cut but i had the freelander fog kit from land rover normal ones on the A bar that i have are just wired up to run when the main beam is on

Hiya, thks buddy

I've also been thinking about amber lights and mounting them onto two of the brackets instead of fogs and the other two having spots

As I'm a volunteer for a 4x4 rescue group would be ideal to mount 2 x square orange flashing lights and use one of the switches for that

I also looked on the loom and it looks like I remove a bigish connector from the back of the headlight and then put part of the loom in its place so I assume that for the high beam to come on and off

Ref the orange lights just thought also about having a clear lens and an orange bulb inside so they look the same

As if the fogs arnt allowed that high etc

Just don't know what type of orange lights etc

You said the spots go on the inside , so I could put the orange lights on the outside etc

Will have to try and find a web site etc of the laws regarding mounting positions

On thinking as only 2 will go into the main beam the others if I then decided to also have as spots would then surely only come on and off with the dash mounted switch and bring them in when I'm off road etc

Sorry keep asking daft questions

Gary

The lights on mine are genuine LR Safari 3000's, fitted as per LR instructions, so fitting fog lights that high is ok.
To wire in four spot lights, just have the switch triggering two relays, each one turning on two spotlights.

Thks for that, just wish to make sure its all legal etc

Another thought was about mounting orange leds inside the grill

Want to keep the freelander looking nice

Would defentely buy another one

Been looking on the internet of how orange lights etc are mounted

Also need to work out what the mounting positions are so when it goes in for a mot its ok

Been a member of 4x4 response does not entitle you to display flashing lights of any colour. If you do have a flashing orange light. The light it emits, must be visible from every angle so forwards facing ones are illegal, Unless they are indicators. In which case they must be mounted front and rear and on the outer corners of the vehicle and have a set rate that they must flash at.

Hiya, thks for the info, my fault I did indeed will have flashing lights front and back or a magnectic orange stobe on the roof

The group has all the required police authorisation that they can only be used when recovering a vehicle from the snow etc , or put them on a live lane warning other road users or a broken down vehicle

All the members are all police vetted etc and abide by all highway codes with the use of orange lights

However I'm a new member and don't know where u can and cannot mount orange lights
But know I would be fully legal if I wish to put an orange light on the roof,

Appreciate though any advice

Plus these 4x4 are all over the counties and all have to abide by the relevant laws but as always appreciate advice

I don't know who told you that the police have given the group an exemption from the Law but I can tell you that it's crap. The police uphold the law they do not make or amend it.

Unless you are an official recovery truck (which you're not) or a slow moving vehicle snow plough etc etc. Then it is illegal use flashing amber lights.

I know this because I too used to be a member of a 4x4Response Group, NB it's response not rescue or recovery..

The vehicle within the group do pull out cars etc, towing and recover stuck vehicles

There are as far as I'm aware well over 2000 members then from kent, surrey, sussex etc that use there 4x4's to help stranded motorists and pulling there cars out

So if I go and help someone who is broken down etc I'm legally allowed to use an ornage light to warn other road users, however once that has finished and unhooked the car then I agree I wouldn't be allowed to use it as far as I'm concerned they can only be used whilst recovering another vehicle or towing a car

I know what ya saying and whilst the plod may turn a blind eye. to the illegal use of amber lights. That doesn't change the fact that it is illegal to have them fitted. Strobes in particular are illegal because the flash rate is wrong. Unless your vehicle is registered as a recovery truck council truck utility compnay vehicle, snow plough etc etc then it is illegal to have amber lights fitted.

We had the same discussion many many time when I was a member of York/lincs 4x4Response..

I imagine there are a lot of abuses with the use of an orange light and a very interesting subject

But due to the large amount of work that these groups do and work very closly with the police etc there are strict rules in the use of them etc

Don't know why official web sites though sell illagal rated strobe bars etc

I understand where your also coming from but know the groups are allowed to use roof ornage light bars, or front and rear lights have gone through mots etc

But who has told you that they are illagal etc, just can't see over 2000 members being illegal in the correct use of them, only being used as a warning to other road users etc and only whilst recovering a car etc

Have u got a government link saying that's it illagal etc.

Thks buddy

Summary of Lighting Rules

In the regulations, lights, reflectors and reflective material are all classed as lights on cars (this means that the public cannot have blue reflective graphics for example).

Any colour light is OK to be on a vehicle if it is covered up or not connected up (excluding blue).

Only emergency vehicles can be fitted with a blue flashing light, or anything that looks like a blue flashing light, whether working or not.

Some of the rules do not apply if the vehicle has just been imported or is about to be exported, or if it is a visiting foreign vehicle.

You can’t have a red light showing at the front except:

a red and white chequered light on a fire service control vehicle

a side marker

a reflector on the wheel of a cycle, motorbike or invalid carriage

a traffic sign attached to the vehicle

You can only have a steady white light to the front and a steady red light showing to the rear of your vehicle. The exceptions to this are:

BLUE

flashing from an emergency vehicle
flashing or constant from a police vehicle

GREEN

on a doctor’s car

WHITE

reversing lights

work lamps

AMBER

any vehicle’s indicators

amber pedal reflectors or pedal lights

reflected from a registration plate

reflected from a road clearance vehicle

reflected from a vehicle carrying dangerous substances

reflected on some old or heavy vehicles

flashing amber lights on

a road clearance vehicle

a bin lorry

a breakdown vehicle

a vehicle with a 25 mph top speed

a vehicle wider than 2.9 metres

a roadworks vehicle

an escort vehicle

a Revenue and Customs vehicle

a surveying vehicle

a clamping or tow truck vehicle

airport vehicles

any other specially authorised vehicle

ANY COLOUR

for interior lighting

for registration plate lighting

for taxi meter lighting

for bus route sign lighting

from a traffic sign attached to a vehicle

any colour from the reflectors on a wheel of a cycle, motorbike or invalid carriage

ALSO

white and blue chequered light from a police control vehicle

white and red chequered light from a fire control vehicle

white and green chequered light from an ambulance control vehicle

Any flashing warning beacon that rotates must be mounted 1.2 meters above the ground.

You must be able to clearly see one or more flashing warning lights from any 'reasonable' position around the vehicle

There are no restrictions on the size of the beam of light, wattage or intensity.

Each warning light should flash between 1 and 4 times per second and spend an equal amount of time on and off (meaning strobes are not covered).

You can’t have a moving light on a vehicle except for:

headlamp fine adjustment

a light which turns with the steering wheels

pop-up headlights

indicators on old vehicles

work lamps

flashing warning lights

reflectors on the wheels of cycles, motorbikes or invalid carriages

You can’t have a flashing light except for:

indicators

headlights on an emergency vehicle

flashing lights as described above (on emergency vehicles and vehicles permitted to show other coloured flashing lights)

a light or sign on a vehicle used for police purposes

a green light used as an anti-lock braking indicator

lights on a traffic sign attached to a vehicle

flashing white lights on the front of a cycle

flashing red lights on the back of a cycle

All lights should be of British Standard

All lights for normal night driving should be switched on by one switch (including headlights, side markers and rear registration lights).

To use a vehicle that that doesn’t go above 25 mph on a normal dual carriageway you need to fit an amber flashing light. It is OK if you have a very old car or are just crossing the dual carriageway.

Hiya

Thks buddy, please tell me u copied and pasted that and didn't write that out, lolol

Well the groups that are rescue do have permission or an exemption that allow the members to use orange lights, so I don't know after you kindly wrote that how the exemption works and from who

Will find out some more or try to find the link etc

Obviuosly an interesting subject but can't understand how a few 1000 members can all be illagal or the group not pulled up by the police and nicked

I know there are strict rules etc and maybe we will have to agree to disagree but can only go by what 2000 members plus and that's only southern england and know there are many more

Will see if I can find the link for you
