Would you not be better off getting a 10 year old corsa ?

Depends on the amount you have to spend and what you want to do with it.

Land Rovers are not sports cars, never will be. If you want to race your mates round the car parks of Sainsbury's then as seanmoore2006 says, buy yourself a CAR.

If you want to offroad and can afford the petrol, you can't beat a V8 for power.

For reliability go for the 200/300 TDi over the TD but you will pay more.

You'd be better with a 200tdi. I have a 2.5 N/A myself (basically 2.5td without the turbo) and it's a good running solid engine, but a 200tdi has more power and it'll run a bit quicker. A 2.5td and 200tdi will both get between 25 and 28 mpg but a 2.5td will take to vegetable oil and bio fuel better than a 200tdi.

When it comes to working on the engines and getting parts, a 2.5td is much easier to work on and a lot more simpler to fix. A 200tdi has a bit more compressed in and a load of turbo pipes to get in your way. Parts are just as available for the 2.5td as they are for the 200tdi.

As for a 300tdi, a newer engine still, but even harder to work on with regards to awkward parts and positions. It's a touch quicker, has a bit more torque but wont be as good on the fuel consumption.

A 2.5td should suit you well, but you'll have to mind not to thrash it. It's an early turbo engine and they weren't really designed to hande a turbo block, but they do, and they can handle it, but if you push it too hard you might bend a pushrod or a crank shaft. A 200tdi is probably going to be your best bet if you want to pull up hills, tow a trailer and generally keep up with traffic as soon as they've left the traffic lights.

Good Luck!

Aye Seanmoore, I'm only 17 but I wouldn't touch a corsa with a barge pole (I'd consider hitting it with one). There are some propper Fred Dibnah following kids like us left about I'll have you know, not many, but there are a few.

You adults are to blame for todays problms. Just think of all those delicate little soft kids back in your school claases that you could have beaten into shape. They're all politicians now, and they're the ones who've abolished propper discipline because they don't want their precious little babies from being smacked on the backside. Nayy I say, now look what's happened. There's chavs everywhere. Kids shout and scream at their parents and go out killing people, with no respect for Britains Industrial past and all that. If only you'd actually pounded that stuck up, untouchable little snob all those years back in class.

Sigh.

Aye but there is something to do with the setup of the engine that makes it more efficient than 200tdi's, regardless of the pump.

Just digging for the link now...

Just out of interest, can I fit a bosche pump to my n/a?

I'm assuming you've seen an F reg landy somewhere with a 2.5td in. If it's any good and the price is right and you like it buy it. If not keep looking until one you are happy with turns up. Asking questions like this on here will get you as many different answers as there are Land Rovers as everyone thinks their particular type is better than everyone elses. Unless you can find someone who has extensive experience of owning the various different engine/body/whatever combinations and is willing to give you the benefit of their wisdom all you're going to get is opinions and as we all know opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one:D

so this is also a site for Vauxhall enthusiasts!! anyhows I'm an old man now(37!) but want to keep up on the open roads a bit. the wife has a Disco 3 and I am swapping my Subaru for a Landy as its where I'm at right now. I enjoy outdoor pursuits (not car chases) and that takes my to the hills and ravines of Dorset, Yorkshire, Hampshire and the flat of Suffolk. Not towing - just a couple of fishing rods and a dog really.

I like the bio diesel - hadnt thought of that! cheers.....

does the 2.5 TD have an intercooler and has anyone tried twisted performance products?

as a Newby...........be gentle!

good reply!

i like the car but have not owned a defender before. i know that generally there unbreakable and this one has been looked after. its 2.5k and has 120k on th clock, new tyres - so its probably not a bad one.

cheers

For distance driving and occasional green laning I'd go for a disco tdi, you'll appreciate the higher comfort they offer after a long trip. Also you don't have to have the stereo turned up full blast or have to shout to be heard over the noise of the engine, in a disco. Defenders are more fun but Disco's are more sensible. and definately go for the Tdi over a TD. more torque and better on hills and motorways. I get about 32mpg on a motorway run in the disco.

I'm starting to think i am a problem with my 110 - i only need the stereo turned a quarter up to hear it on the motorways and the heater is more than warm enough, it doesnt leak or smell of oil and bits dont fall off it - have i got a badun?

my daughters 90td must have been made on the same day as seanmoores as it also goes like a train and nothing so far has fallen off, but given the choice of using hers or my disco300tdi for either a green lane day or a long journey i would take the disco everytime. My disco cost less for a '95 model than her '87 90 so value for money is a lot better and it certainly does open up a greater choice out there in the market place.

Mine doesn't leak or smell either and the heater works fine. Nothing has fell off yet and the only thing that makes it noisy at speed is the bfg muds. Come to think of it after driving a series 3 about for a bit it feels positively luxurious:D

that's funny I don't recall saying things fell off or didn't work properly on Defenders. I've owned both a disco and a 110n/a and I find the disco quieter and more comfortable. I actually liked my 110 but it was slow and noisey, and until I changed the seats, uncomfortable.

My G reg 110 CSW isn't as noisy as the 53 Transit I drove for a while but it does leak, smell of oil and bits have fallen off it so I mine must be about average then.
