Hi, wondering if anyone can help!

Was off-roading the other day, everything going nicely, then the (i think) gearbox/transfer started making the odd noise.

Seen as i have just has a new gearbox fitted, i thought it cant be that so.

anyway, tried to take it out of 4wd, and it was stuck in.
Drove it home in 4wd anyway with a lot of horible noises. (about 5 mins away)

I think its the transfer box myself, but not sure.

Can anyone help.

Its a Discovery 1, 3.5v8, (jreg)

Thanks Ian

Guess he means in low range? (hopefully not w/ diff lock engaged)

auto or manual?

Ashcroft might be worth a call

Sounds to me like he means diff-lock engaged and that he's fecked the centre diff ... Be an idea for him to post back with a clearer description ... ;)

So .. just to be clear ...

When you started to hear the noises, you say you tried to take it out of 4wd, do you mean you tried to take it out of diff-lock? and it wouldn't come out?

Or do you mean out of low range and it wouldn't go back into high?

Either way, first thing I'd check would be the UJ's, and the prop, diff and gearbox drive flanges. Might be lucky and it's just an input/output bearing gone ...

Then all the half-shafts, 'specially the rears. Undo each wheels five bolts that hold the drve flanges on and see if they're still attached to the shafts properly. Doesn't matter that the noise seems to come from the box, noise travels up hollow tubes quite easily ... If you're very lucky a prop or flange has broken and is somehow applying pressure to the tranny box so it won't 'drop' out of difflock/low-range.

Trouble is, as has been said, it's likely to be the difflock that's farked and cheapest 'fix' would be a new box, possibly.
