help !! what does this bit do ??

Ok, thanks for looking, bear with me..

(re 300tdi, single serpentine, no air con)

Standing at the front, the serpentine belt goes (clockwise) past the tensioner (smooth side), over the top pulley,grooved side, (water pump?), over the small pulley, grooved side (alternator? I reckon so), then goes back on itself over a larger pulley on the smooth side of the belt. Its kind-of in the middle of the other pulleys.

So what does this ungrooved pulley actually do? Mine is all wobbly and loose and has therefore broken two fan belts this week. Or does it just help the belt wind round and do nothing else?

Looks like I need a new head gasket. Could this wobbly thing be the other cause of gasketty symptoms? Of is it just because of the overheating a dodgy belt has led to. Any help appreciated. The pully appears on images I can get on t'internet, but is never labelled. This is why I am guessing it does nowt but be a pulley!

Hi Steve, it's a bit difficult to visualise from your description but I reckon you might be talking about your pas pump, are there 2 rubber pipes leading to it? If the pulley is "wobbley" it's about to disintegrate, so don't use the car til you've got it fixed or it'll do more damage.

Yes that worked, its marked with the red arrow. The diagram I pulled off the net is turned around a bit, but hopefully you can see that the next one back (anticlockwise) is the alternator (I think) then the water pump (again, I think, top in this diagram), then the tensioner. CAn't see any pipes coming off it, I have been searching PAS images on google images and it isn't shouting at me that it is this pulley, but (frankly) what I really need is a diagram that tells me what each pulley does. Anyway, does the image tell you?? I am a rank amature here!

Thanks, but you don't sound too sure !! Anyone know of a diagram or sommat that nails this down ? I just can't find anything that confirms this possiblity. Still searching images on t'net !!
 
Don't get me wrong, help appreciated and also that you don't want to say something you cant be bang-on about! Can't help think you have an advantage in not having a tdi to look at, right now. The view is starting to wear on me a bit.

PAS pump no question - just been out to check on my wife's TDi.

If you follow the pipes from the pas header tank you'll come to the pump.

I had this great idea, can't think where it came from.. I followed the pipes from the PAS top-up and....

many thanks Dave, and G-man, problem solved.... well, identified at least. When can you pop round and fix it?
Really though, I appreciate the help. Here's hoping it wont be too much as an add-on cost to the head gasket fix

it gets hot, pretty quickly and with pressure. No mayo in the oil, but the man that knows thinks the only reason it could be this way is that a leak is pressurising but not putting water in the oil. I hope that is a fair representation of what he is saying.

I think he means the water is leaking into the engine not the oil (yet, maybe)

Does this make sense? Any other ideas? I have wondered if the dodgy pulley means that belt wasn't doing its job well enough as far as the water pump is concerned, but my knowledge is theoretical not technical, so that's all a bit patchy-stab-in-the-darky

The man that knows is really into Landy's, but he didn't know about the pulley failure, so may not have all the info you now have.

PS the PAS pulley seems fine, the whole unit is rattling around loose. How hard will be this to bolt back on? Seems awkward to get to. Do I have to get whole rad off etc??

No, you don't need to take the rad off, but its worth removing the fan and the plastic cowling to get a bity more elbow room in there
 
Thanks, there are some plastic ties on the fan housing thing. If I just cut them off, do I need to jury-rig something (bread ties are my favorite bet) or is there anything I need beyond a 30 year old halfords socket set n' stuff, or anything that isn't obvious (eg things threaded differently etc)?
 
If you are going to remove all of the fan cowling, not just the top cover then you need to know that it is held on with a couple of metal clips at the top and that it is a bit awkward to get out. If you do want to remove the cowling, then you will be better off removing the fan first (many would say leave it off), it is a left hand thread and requires a special spanner (no, not a left handed one :) ), it is thinner than norma, not too expensive, from Halfords, other than that your socket set should do the job (as long as it has metric sockets.

As others have said you will need to remove the viscous fan - to do this in a controlled manner you will need a 32mm cranked viscous fan spanner - about a fiver from Halfords. To release the fanbelt tension you'll need a 15mm socket, a long handled socket driver and to release the belt you turn the nut anti-clockwise to lift the tensioner off the belt - it will take some effort to move it !!!
 
Thanks guys, I have been having a go, but it is all a bit tricky with what I have got, and since I am really really in the wilds, getting to Halfords might be just as hard and expensive as getting this ere bloke to do it (I don't even have the bolts to replace!).

I think my remaining question follows G-man's question about the head gasket symptoms - do we think the advice I have been having from the bloke who doesn't yet know about the loose PAS is still good, or could dodgy PAS and consequential loose belt mimik the head gasket symptoms as described, since there is no mayo?

Really grateful for this ongoing help
