Hi,peeps, got a td4 05 plate 66k, just started with a vibration which has got worse, took it to a garage had it on ramps, examined the prop and found a dodgy rear prop mounting, changed it and its still vibrating.

From cold you hardly notice it but as temp gets nearly to temperature the vibration starts, theirs no noise as such or difference when turning but as you get going up the gears or worse up hill from a standing start the vibration really rattles, not so bad when coasting. I thought it stems from the nsf area or even around central, but as you know vibrations travel.

Any ideas chaps, thanks :scratching_chin:

What about rear diff mounts,, as there are three? Is the vibration a steady vibration, at whatever speed it is you're having this? You say it's front / central, it could be VCU bearings, on the prop. Or a warped brake disc, or a worn engine mount, or a multitude of other bush / bearing related things

Thanks for the reply Crock

The vibration is hardly noticable when car is cold, as it warms up, the vibration gets worse, the floor seems to shake,up hil when giving it some its quite violent,if i shut off and coast it calms down to a very mild vibration, brake seems to grind now and again when giving it a stiff push on the final halt, could this be related and tie in with a knacked disc.

I would maybe have a look at the VCU bearings first. If you're unsure of the location, have a look on the 'VCU Replacement' thread, some great pics on there ;)

A sticking calliper piston or pad slider can cause overheating of the disks. If it's prolonged it can cause a cracked disk that when hot will make the disk warp. This can cause a vibration but it would be felt through the steering too.

I would hedge my bets on it being a defunct or nearly defunct VCU. After driving for a while the fluid in the VCU is being overheated gradually causing vibrations to start as the drive train starts to bind up. That's why it only happens after the car has been driven for a while.

The vibration you describe, like the floor vibrating, is exactly what happened to me going up the M6 one day. I would remove the prop post haste firstly to check it is the VCU (if the vibrations go away) and secondly to save the rest of your drive train.

O.k fellas , update and no solution:(

IDEAS WELCOME PLEASE.

Took it back to garage, removed prop, still drove awful, no change.

Had every inch scoured lookin for problem,no signs of any faults around wheel areas, joints ,bushes infact anything to mention.

What we did pick up on was nsf tyre tread just slightly more worn than rest. Now these tyres are only a few months old, but cheap sunny tyres.

We swopped the 2 front ones around and the vibration isnt half as bad.

First off mechanic mentioned having a gearbox specialist take a look, then mentioned the limited slip differential may have a problem, due to the tyre wear which it maybe dragging the tyre on corners causing it to wear.

So is it just cheap tyres causing this, i dont want to spend a fortune on branded tyres if its gonna wear it down cause of another problem i have.

P.S I did intend to buy a set of branded ones to start with but never had any in stock at the time.

Thoughts , ideas please. Thanks Tony.

I had a similar vibration, eventually got fed up so I dropped the prop and ran 2wd, found it, viscous coupling, replaced it, refitted prop, fine now, not cheap though

Something is causing the tyre wear but it won't be the LSD as a Freelander doesn't have one ;) The VCU is probably on it's way loading up the drive train!!

Why would the VCU wear one front tyre?

Cheap tyres, or wheel alignment.

Anything that loads up the drivetrain will cause all sorts of unusual wear!! What causes the Wranglers to wear in such a strange pattern? It's the constant gentle drag of the VCU!! If the rear tyres are a more durable type then it's possible fore the fronts to wear instead!! There is no way to say exactly what is causing tyre wear on a forum as we only have part of the information needed!! It's a case of the OP checking everything!!

If as you say nothing has been found with the suspension or drive train and you had an improvement by swapping tyres then that's got to be the culprit.

If you have fitted "sub-standard" cheap tyres (no all cheap tyres are sub-standard) then they could have a fault.

For instance a cold tyre when inspected could look normal even with de-lamination issues. When warm a de-laminated tyre (usually in the side wall) can become alarmingly out of shape thus causing vibrations. De-lamination is not just an issue with cheap tyres either, I've had it with a pair of michelins on a company car once.

Thank FOOK!!!!!! Finally sorted, drives like a dream now, the sensation of getting tossed off by a jigger picks gone. Driveshaft had collapsed, replaced and new diff seal done at same time. ALLSSS GOOD. :clap2::clap2:
