HELP: Transfer box stuck in neutral....

Hi, I am 17 on may the 3rd and have just bought a c reg 90, the transfer box sticks in neutral and very occasionly will engauge into high, it wont engague low ever and it takes lots of attempts to get it into high.
I am new to land rovers and wondered if anyone could come up with any suggestions?

I'm new to Land Rovers too, however, a transfer box is a transfer box.

First (subject to this being correct) have the vehicle stationary and in neutral

Then try to move the lever to hi/low, if this doesn't want to move then you may want to get under and check to see if you can get to the linkage (Subject to you being able to access the linkages)

If not then you may need the Transfer box looked at.

The easiest way to see the linkage is under the seats (i think??). Have you tried putting it into gear and letting the clutch up slowly to help it engage???

You might find that it has never been in low ratio before and the rods have a habit of sticking or ceasing up. Discos suffer from this, particularly the 'Kings Road' ones that never go off road.

Get to the High/Low linkages (easiest by removing the gearbox cover from inside the car) and drown the linkages with WD40. Wiggle the Hogh/Low lever and if it gets things moving then spray lubricant on it as WD40 is a petrol based non-lubricant and it will dry out and encourage rust.

I'm not too sure, but the Td5 owners handbook says, step on clutch before doing anything to that lever.

mine is pretty stiff cos i seldom move it, but what i usually do is, clutch in, shift from high to neutral, release clutch, step again and push into low, you should hear a sound somthing like the gears are meshing and that means it engages.

I can remeber years ago on a Ser2 that the selector rod for the 2/4 wd gets a lot of mud and crud on it and does occasionally need cleaning up outside, I also seem to remember that there was some rust from condensation on the inside of the selector rod that I had to clean up, after No problem. Hope this helps from a new boy to another!
